Delta Pilots Vote to Authorize Strike by ~95%

It may help the industry, but I don't think it will be in the way most people think, if at all. It's less like showing management that you're fed up with it, and more like solving overpopulation by dropping a nuke on a large population of people, then shooting yourself in the face. Except that it's not even as sure a solution as that.

Delta goes out of business, there's a chance that the overcapacity (which I'm not convinced exists) will be fixed, but more likely the other airlines will jump in so fast and in such a fury that nothing will change and we'll be right back where we were before, except that 80,000 people will be without jobs.

What's wrong with what they are doing in France? They signed a law where you can get Fired for no reason the first two years of employment. When unemployment is already high for youths in that country, imagine if you could get fired for no reason. Sounds like an excellent way to compete in a global environment! The sad thing is, the pilots of Delta have done their jobs, When is management going to start doing theirs? How can you cut someones pay 48% and expect to get away with it, those pilots didn't work all those years for nothing, they worked hard for where they are at, and yet management continues to fail but blames all the groups involved in making that company run.

The thing is, that in France, the law is that you can be fired, not that you can be fired sans reason. Previously, employers had to pay a fine if they fired people. Now, if they fire youths (Pittsburgh: Utes) they won't have to pay it, which just makes it slightly more likely that you can be fired.

But heaven forbid people get fired for being incompetant!

foxnews? Are you kidding me? Was that sarcasm? Or were you serious?

Fair and Balanced. Ahahahah. Yeah, so is my checkbook! Now thats funny!

It's so funny how corp america/gov't have the worker bees conditioned so well into thinking its either this way or no way. "Way to go, do you realize how much money is going to be lost from tourism? Yeah, I know, screw them & the government, *sigh"

Money list from tourism? Considering the gov't knew something of this sort would happen and they did it anyway, should be enough reason for it to happen. Didn't your beloved foxnews (which is fair and balanced) discuss why France just got over some of the worst and longest riots in its history because the immigrant youth in that country felt worthless. Oh wait, thats right, they always seem to not cover these things because they're not considered "newsworthy".

So easy to roll over.

Well, you have to think about the other way, right now, if a company fires/dismisses a worker for whatever the reason, the company has to pay a penalty.

So, as an employee are you willing to take a chance on a younger worker? Do all possible to hire a replacement worker & instead rely on paying overtime to present workers?

Amazing

Fox news is a legimate news serivce, most people when they think of Fox news think of the talk shows in the evening. Go to Foxnews.com, Cnn.com, MSNBC.com & they all cover the same type of news, hell they get it from the same serice.

So, by proposing this law, it is the French Government's fault that the people rioted? That is nonsense, people have to accept blame for their own action....

The laws in France are restrictive to hire any worker, with unemployement around 10%, if a French citizen is having trouble finding work, an immigrant is going to find work that much harder...

By the way, all news services covered the previous French riots.

As for France, you are speaking about a country that is known for its strikes, been going on for years....

Most people in the US can be fired for no reason, it's called at-will employment you can be fired for a reason or no reason but not an illegal reason.

Is there really a difference between any of them?

Hahahaha! Airline stock?

If you're thinking of buying stock in an airline, here's what you should do instead:

Take a 100$ bill, take it outside, light a match under it, and set it down. Watch it burn. Then, go back inside $100 poorer, just like you'd be if you bought airline stock, but at least having the delight of experiencing the lovely weather outside while your money burned.
I dunno.. now might be the time to start shorting the stock again! :sarcasm: (sorta?)

I know.. I'm just using the example that what'shisname used when he was on here talking about all the money he was gonna make while delta was going down...remember that?

that's where the *funny funny ha ha* part comes in! :)

Sorry if I jumped the gun on that one....United is my family! I might not have a family member working there anymore, or even a family member recieving a pension from them directly anymore, but it hits home.

Yes, I remember the threads on shorting stocks....NOT GOOD!

If only I could start a fire

I can't. There is a burn ban here in Oklahoma. I could get fined even more money. :D

I think if it was left up to the pilots they might, but I don't think the union brass will go after management as hard as they should

I'd sure like to know what you're basing this on.

ATA voted >90% to strike, then laid down being the most recent example. Seems lately that the trend has been acquiesance rather than the old "full pay to the last day" gung-ho-men-ship from the union heads.

I'm not saying that the pilots don't want it or won't do it if it happens, because they will, I'm just not sure it'll get to that point.

If both parties don't figure something out, they are both going to lose. There are no angels on either side, shame on them both......

Based upon???

Shame on me? WTF did I do beyond give up 32.5%-plus of my livelihood to ensure some dorks that are the ones that got us into trouble, walked away with a few million for their gladiator-like efforts?

Am I, personally, the one that threw fare sale after fare sale during ever increasing fuel costs?

Am I, personally, the one that sold off the fuel hedges to fund SERPS?

Am I, personally, the one that pulled off jets with CASM's less than $.10 to put on $0.25-plus CASM jets that passengers had a strong preference against?

HTF do you qualify "shame on both"? Good grief.

Broham, you know I luv ya like my brotha from anotha motha, but that's straight up ridiculous.

This isn't ATA.

Dough, i think chris is referring to the union -> as in they let down the NWA pilots...and ATA pilots...as in the union is the one that decides whether there is or is not a TA they can bow down too...

I think he's referring more to union than to the pilots themselves IMO.

Yeah, I'm saying it's time for us (the pilots) to have that one person that management will be cursing forever, just as us pilots curse Lorenzo. The union head who takes the airlines to the cleaners.

Sabes? :)
