Delta OAL Dispatcher Jumpseat Exclusion

Does anyone know Delta's policy on facial hair for dispatchers?
I'm trying to JS tomorrow on a 90 minute flight and I have a goatee...nothing wild...
just want to make sure I'm not going to have to run to the bathroom and shave before getting approved to JS.

Technically, you can't have more than a mustache..... That being said, if you're wearing a mask, maybe your nephew gave you strep for instance, they're not gonna check underneath....(And even if they did, you'd be clean shaven)

I don't want any problems...I'll just shave down to a cop stache...I'll look like a cop for three weeks...but them's the breaks

Maybe they shouldn't make everyone pass a "personality" test and drink the koolaid before they let you in the door.

I mean when you have the worst hiring process known to man, that sort of stuff happens. I applied to DL and my current carrier on the same day. I tested for both on back to back days. Passed both tests. My current carrier then interviewed me over the phone and then a second interview. Then hired me, did all the obligatory pre-hire paperwork. This allowed 6 weeks to prepare for a move.....

Delta then called me while 10 minutes away from my new place in my new city on moving day. Had they actually gone forward with any urgency whatsoever, I would have jumped all over the chance to work there. BUT I can't be happier that I ended up where I ended up.

I’ll see your, easy modes and raise you SDF.
Heh, there is a risk in concentration to one hub though. I remember one day I had a flight into MEM during the cargo rush hour when it got hit by thunderstorms. Something like 70 FDX diversions, with around 20 to ATL alone. Glad I was not in that OCC that night trying to untangle that kind of network chaos.

If someone jumpseating has a beard the flight crew shouldn't care to be honest. It's the jumpseaters discretion if they want to impede the effectiveness of the oxygen mask, the flight crews should be flying the plane if the masks are needed. That's an issue my coworker had and told that to the crew who wanted to deny him up front for a FAM ride.

Which would then make the JS a possible liability to the crew if they become incapacitated in the seat because the mask couldn't seal properly. Now the crew may have to divert their attention to assist or worst case could ultimately prevent them from rapid escape from the flight deck.

Well.. for us the facial hair issue is under “appearance”. But yet I can still wear a baseball cap with overgrown hair sticking out of it and tennis shoes with no problems (for the most part) and no one seems to care.

We all know what we signed up for. If they have to step over me they step over me. I don’t expect them to be pulling me out with em.

Had a captain tell me during his jumpseat briefing that if I wasn't first out the door in an emergency, he'd be stepping over my dead lifeless body. When they say they're not pulling you out...believe them o_O

Who is escaping the flight deck at an altitude where oxygen would be required? 🧐

There’s at least one 121 carrier that allows pilots to have beards within standards. They based the policy not being able ro find any studies that show conclusively that the masks won’t proper seal. And when set to 100% emergency O2 there’s so much oxygen coming at you it won’t matter if some slips out.

It all goes back to the US military’s fascination with the Roman centurions and their requirements to be clean shaved. 🤣

I’m not saying you should allowed to roll up with a Billy Gibbons beard but maybe some reasonable leeway.

It’s also the captain’s discretion to kick out the JS for not following protocol. I can’t imagine the JS in this scenario arguing to a captain about how it’s their discretion to bend the rules about having facial hair on some airline’s metal while trying to hitch a ride up front. If it’s a fam ride, shave it—you knew what you signed up for. If it’s personal, and if it’s something you want to grow out, buy a ticket like the rest in the back.

My understanding is that most masks are positive pressure masks and do not require a perfect seal. This is certainly the case at my carrier, who allow neatly trimmed beards both for flight crew and jumpseaters. Possibly on carriers with more varied fleets this may not be entirely true, and may justify maintaining the policy for safety reasons; but I'm pretty sure a good chunk of these policies are more about maintaining the "pilot look".
