Delta meets some Greek F16s

"Okay, so open up Navtech."
"Yeah, I'm in it. So what's this preference?"
"So this is how it works..."
[1 hr later]
"WHAT?! What is this "forgotten" Why wasn't it honored?!
[intercom buzzes]
"Oh yeah, go to the reason reports. Watch this, click here, and then that..."
[30 minutes later]
"Hey, look man there is a F16 ahead of us!"
"Dude will you pay attention? I'm trying to explain to you what shuffling is!"

Nicosia is like that. Tabriz Radar is similar and Tabriz (Iranian Air Defense) doesn't always get information from Tehran ATC. The Greek system is pretty "challenged" as well.

I flew all the way through Bamako and Abijan control one night and never got a controller. We just broadcast in the blind. Wasn't until Accra control that we were back in positive control.

It seems rather common. Manilla doesn't seem to like me personally very much.

So was it nap time?
My money is on Greece fabricating a story about sleep to cover their own ATC's incompetence, similar to the Brazilian tall tales about intentional transponder deactivation to facilitate "pilot tricks" in the Gol midair.

In my short stint of flying internationally, I've NEVER called the next countries sector repeatedly and had them not reply for 25 minutes. NEVER. Also, that 1 HF frequency they are using for 14 different countries within 500 miles? Ya, it's super easy to check on when they do that.
I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. NORDO for 18 minutes hardly seems scramble the F-16's worthy. On a civilian plane with a known route.

Sounds like you have been to Africa.

"XXX Center, XXX100 on XXX.X"

Repeat above 10 times.

*BING BONG* "Continue via CPDLC"

Um....k

Tehran ATC management has been informed and will be working on it. Just FYI

Generally, you've got to call Tehran 15 mins prior to the FIR boundary but make a secondary call to Iranian Air Defense (Tabriz) on the other comm to tell them who you are, where you started, where you're going, etc. But you've given a google of numbers and only one of them works, depending on well, stuff.

We spend grand expanses of time without radar contact, especially in lower Europe.

Or we could just do like you and "go dark" and penetrate the airspace! :)

Just don't end up as the next KAL007

At least the Iranians speak English well, the Turks on the other hand...try to handle more than two planes arriving into IST at the same time ugh
