Delta Hiring Update

I guess my angle is that I went from the Beech 1900 to the 727, then to the 737-200 (which had a more spacious cockpit than the NG's) so it felt like it had some "heft". But then realizing that I had less space than the mad dog on a far more modern airplane like the NG was maddening.

I haven't been in the cockpit of the 787, but if it's anything like the 737 (with space for a third), those ergonomic engineers should be strangled.

Man, flying the 737-800 was like flying the space shuttle compared to the CRJ! It didn't seem that bad space wise, but I guess having some time on the 75/76 will change one's perspective

That's pretty much it.

I think it all depends on where you come from.

Hell I rode the Dash-8 Jumpseat from MSP to MQT a back in 1997 to get to work and it seemed like the spacious deck of a cruise ship compared to the 1900.

Which I thought was huge compared to the Junkstream many of my friends were flying at Waterski.

Love it!

And probably that same damned overhead in order to please Southwest.

That is one of the biggest urban legends in aviation. If DAL had been the launch customer the overhead would look the same. There is only so much you can do and keep a common type rating, which was the main driving force. The only thing SWA got was taking those pretty screens and making them look like round dials.

I'm sorry but

LOL about cockpit size.

But it's a lot more fun to blame SWA. I think I'll keep doing it.

The -900's are doing a lot of "flag" stops for fuel. It's not replacing the 757-200 as promised.

...and there's nothing out there that can truly do the 757's mission. Boeing screwed the pooch on this one. There needs to be a true 757 replacement. I'm so glad that the 739ER (@H46Bubba) and the A321 cannot fulfill the 757's mission.

Agreedo! I didn't say the -900ER was a good replacement for the 757, just that it will be for a long while.

I remember back in the day when A320/1s and 737NGs started doing transcon routes. Many tech stops were had in SLC and LAS. It seems like that's less common, but I don't know how they addressed that (maybe winglets made it possible?).

Ultimately it's about moving butts from A to E with the lowest CASM. If the E7320 can do it with a stop for ass and gas at C, welp. The 757 fuel burn is typically 15% higher per mile, which is a big (althought I want to find out what the average penalty for a stop at C is).

Hey @Cav .....

What are your thoughts about the Scarebus?

Also down with Virginia Tech.

Admittedly my experience with the bus was short lived because I got displaced pretty quickly. It took me a little longer to wrap my arms around it than I thought it would. Perhaps that could be because I was coming to it from the -9 which is still one of my favorites....lots of times I think I should have stayed on the -9 until it was parked.

Anyway, there were a lot of things I liked about the bus. The obvious are the table, the overhead panel, the FD size, the comfort, etc. The less obvious things are the way it landed, the unobstructed cockpit view, the comfort of the passenger cabin, the air conditioning system, tillers on both sides, flight path angle option, and a few others.

Some things I didn't like....the FMS, the thrust levers (no manual override like the Boeing with out turning them off), the way the flight director and auto thrust can really screw you when hand flying with 1 FD on and the other pilot's off, hand flying it in general was kind of boring, the Fisher Price thrust reversers, the Fisher Price brakes, landing it in a crosswind.

I was indifferent in the stick v yoke dept. I think both Airbus and Boeing (at least the 757/767) have good but not great VNAV systems. Plenty of room for improvement with both. In the end, I'm not a convert in either direction. Lots to like and things I would like to see improved on both the little bus and the 75/76. It would be interesting to talk to a A320 pilot who had also flown the 330 to see if Airbus made improvement to the big sister the way people say Boeing fixed all the 75/76 glitches in the 777.

@Seggy did you know there is an empty trophy case in the VT football office that has a sign in it that reads "reserved for future national championship trophy." True story. Thankfully it's still empty.

What are you going to bid next? A320? 717?

Ain't nobody got time for five weeks of training and not seeing an appreciable increase in pay.

I hear Doug's putting on the big boy pants and adding a stripe... MSP320CA..... :-)
