Delta hat culture?

Pilat hats should be hi-viz bump caps.

Not full-on hard hats because we wouldn't want anyone to mistake you for someone with a hard job. But you should still have some safety for when you stick your gourd into greasy places and be seen when you turtle.

I feel this would coalesce the varied opinions about wearing a uniform hat.

In fairness I have thought of having a ramper friend of mine order me a bump cap just to wear on walk arounds. It's dangerous being 198 cm tall.

QX, rampers under 6 months on the job had to wear helmets.

Parked at Q10 on night, female ramper was under the nose area doing something…backed up and raised her head straight into the ice detect probe.

Blood everywhere, bit of skin on the probe, lots of SEATAC EMS.

MX Control “wait, what happened to the ice detect probe?!”

It’s funny to me of all the Naval traditions that were adopted in the early evolution Juan Trippe aviation era, hats are the one that seems to be still enduring. Hats largely died from US men’s fashion with Kennedy and a half century of decline. I’ve always hated wearing a hat, and berets can burn in hell so I don’t get the power some people seem to think it garners.

I guess that and Pursers as a title are some of the few nautical roots that still exist.

I remember reading "Hard Landing" when I was out in the middle of the ocean on deployment, pondering airline flying, on my kindle. IIRC there is a chapter sort of dedicated to all the Naval traditions that Pan Am brought on board with their Clipper flying. Things that just became industry standards eventually ("Captain"/FO/so many others)

Did they at least decapitate her to prevent such a mishap in the future?

Thankfully she was ok…we heard a thud, then an ear piercing scream from outside. FO and I both bolted out and saw her on the ground, her lead rushing over.

It was to the top of her head, like a miniature fountain.

Lucky it didn’t puncture her skull.

Maybe a bit after 2000 the UPS pilots started ignoring the hat thing. So many didn't wear it there was nothing they could do about it. Hat's are dumb for freight dudes. I think it was the 2016 contract where they decided to make the hat optional, officially.
I think they gave me one during Indoc. Damned if I know where it is now.

I don’t work at Delta and will never understand the people at my shop who voluntarily wear the hat 🙄
Chick's dig it. Probably gay dudes too. Chime in team rainbow? So either way, good idea. I think it looks badass, at least at the legacy level. If I was living with regional QOL, I think the JSX polo and beards allowed is better.

Chasen, we love the hat, and cowboy boots. Where are those pics etc etc

I still can't for the life of me give a single F how my coworkers wear their uniform. Of all the things in life I need to care about that isn't remotely even close to a thing I notice.

FO showed up to our dark o clock in the morning show and said sheepishly. "I forgot to shave".

I didn't even say I didn't notice. I just shrugged. Not only did I not notice. I didn't care after he told me. I'm certain he didn't forget to shave. My alarm went off at 0230 my body clock time. It was brutal. If not shaving is how you make it through that moment it's fine by me.

CS called me at 0200 for a trip. So I got up and made coffee and eggs. Now I have to shower and shave. I'll probably wear my stupid hat too. Why any of that is significant enough to bother to write down is embarrassing. Why do pilots care about what people do with their uniform so much?

Pilots bitching about uniform codes that were in place when they applied, interviewed, and accepted the job are not at all different from people who buy a house next to an airport and then complain about airport noise.

You signed your name. Suck it up, buttercup.

(Says the guy who wears chinos and a polo to work).

Edit: thinking further about it, the guys I'm jealous about are the amphib 206 guys who get to wear shorts and topsiders in summer. That alone is almost worth putting in an application.

Wish we could copy United and make it optional when the blazer period is off for the summer, but our last uniform survey they essentially took all the results of what the pilots asked for and threw it in the shredder. They will just do what they wanted anyways. So I will not be giving them any of my time on another survey again lol

As far As the hat I just do what I’m told, wear it to the van and then it doesn’t go back on my head till I’m back on airport property.

sighs here’s an easy quarter million bucks, but you have to shave, cover your ink, show up for short call and wear your damned lid

How DARE you! :)

It’s generational and socioeconomic.

Tattoos - knock yourself out, I really don’t care as my own country of birth makes me feel ‘unique’ even more so than foreign countries. The policy is no visible tattoos, end of story.

Hats - I knew it was an image-forward company when I applied, they pay me, and even at my ‘level’, they never query my opinion on corporate image so I have bad news for the grumpy pilot is mad because his cop coat was more practical or comfortable at his last regional.

Beards - it’s complicated

My generation had the “mullet” - it looks alright on some people, but most, “Bruv, come on now, you’re not Billy Ray Cyrus”
Millennials have a fascination with beards. It looks good on some people, but most: “You look like Ernest Hemingway after a ketamine bender”
Gen Z has their broccoli top haircut.

I’ll retire and die, then the people who never got to wear beards will complain about their Gen Z “broccoli top” first officers and the broccoli tops will complain about Gen Alpha’s fascination with capri pants.

The grumpy broccoli tops pilots will tell the Alpha’s “Ryan Gosling pulled off Capri pants and, Tover, you’re no Ryan Gosling…”

Bets start at $50.

And the cycle will continue until Emperor Eric Trump the Third gets us into a thermonuclear war with Brazil.

A theocratic government that gets us into nuclear war with Brazil? Has someone besides @Ian_J been reading Bobiverse?
