Delta hat culture?

Has the hat culture changed at Delta lately? Recently I've seen more Delta pilots sans hat, not the hat hitching a ride on the roller bag type deal but completely absent. Has policy changed? Has the culture changed? I'm just curious because I was Atlanta based from 2007 to 2013 and I NEVER saw a Delta pilot without at least a hat on their person somewhere.

After “hats off to a new contract”, there’s been an increase in “I’ll wear my hat when the contract is fully implemented” or “I’ll wear it when pay is fixed”.

Atleast on the west coast that seems to be the thoughts on it.

I wear it, personally. Last trip had to go with the north face, because blazer wasn’t ready at the dry cleaners.

I think it’s a combination of factors. You’ve got the folks, mostly north, who simply loathe the hat and are willing to flirt with formal disciplinary actions to not wear it. There are the people who got out of the habit during the “hats off” campaign, with mnay feeling the contract has still not been implemented, so no hat. There are newer hires who think it looks goofy, and there are those who are waiting on the “commuter friendly “ hat promised in the fiasco that has been our uniform refresh. In the end if a large enough percentage of the pilot group can’t find their hat, how much is the company willing to spend in fighting it?

I wear mine, I hate it, but as a new hire during the hats off we were told to wear it, so I did. Now I’m used to it, and I’m too chicken to ditch it.

Hats off started a week or two after my INDOC, and I was an observer for a picketing event when it was announced.

My first thought was “oh -ish, this is going to make someone’s head explode in Addlanna”

I wear mine, mainly because my base is wetter than most, and it serves a purpose.

You’re a captain, it’s not like you have to go outside in it 😛

That’s just false all around…here, atleast on the 73, we split up duties. If I’m PM, I’m walking around (sun, rain, snow, etc) and doing the cockpit set up.

I do walk arounds unless there’s something going on that requires my attention (like something on release is wrong, adding MEL/MX issue). I buy the beers/bourbon drinks, and buy supper if my FO’s saved me/us from a big goof up.

It’s funny to me of all the Naval traditions that were adopted in the early evolution Juan Trippe aviation era, hats are the one that seems to be still enduring. Hats largely died from US men’s fashion with Kennedy and a half century of decline. I’ve always hated wearing a hat, and berets can burn in hell so I don’t get the power some people seem to think it garners.

I guess that and Pursers as a title are some of the few nautical roots that still exist.

If the company that pays you says wear the hat, guess you need to wear it.
If it’s optional and you still want to wear it, then rock that skycap look you sweet bastard!

My propensity to don the Hub Cap is in direct relation to the proximal nature of the CPO during office hours.

Or more correctly it depends if I'm having a good hair day or not.

Pilat hats should be hi-viz bump caps.

Not full-on hard hats because we wouldn't want anyone to mistake you for someone with a hard job. But you should still have some safety for when you stick your gourd into greasy places and be seen when you turtle.

I feel this would coalesce the varied opinions about wearing a uniform hat.
