Dan Gryder is a POS again

I always compare it to someone learning English as a second language from a British person, then their first experience trying to use it in the real world being with a person from the backwoods of Louisiana or the hollers in West Virginia.

As far as the Puerto Ricans go, having been part of the US since 1898 and having K-12 Engrish [sic] classes doesn't help. 😄

Do they have English classes in PR? I got a flat in my rental there and when I called the Hertz roadside assistance they didn’t speak any English. Neither did the security guard who came to see what I was about. Had to resort to 2015 Google translate, which wasn’t quite as good as it is now.

Maybe it was the beard, man! :)

We should make them the 51st state.

I’m not so sure they want to get “Hawaii’d”. At least according to the opening song by Ricky Martin during the Superbowl.

Are there K-12 mandatory English classes in the entire system? Yes.
Are those courses enough to get people to a conversational English level? Absolutely not.

Should we send Dan to TI?

Two years into Duolingo French lessons and I do not know how to ask for directions to the library! C’est incroyable!
I gave up on Duolingo a long time ago when I realized all it does it hammer stuff like "the cat eats apples" over and over again like you're being tortured.

Problem is you gotta plow through a mass of those kinds of lessons in the start to get towards any actual useful bits. The AI chatbots are decent but you gotta do the paid versions. I use it on the road to keep my mind in some French but beyond using it for pronunciation cues most of my actual learning comes at home from work books, reading and translating various short works, and my monthly video chats with a tutor that lives in Paris.

Oh, I know. Exactly the same person that won’t understand why many of our people celebrate in the middle of June and largely don’t give a diddly squat about July 4th!

He knows why, but doesn’t accept it. But no one cares that he doesn’t. But it’s a thing and will always be a thing! ;)

Juneteenth.

I’m going to Europe with family for the first time in 10 years, so I won’t be around. Denmark, Sweden.
