I read about this the other day, and have been hoping for a chance to fly over it in good weather. The stars aligned today on the way back from Juneau. I've been up here for most of my life and I still find this kind of stuff to be mind boggling.

Where does the "southernjets" nick name come from?

It's a shortened version of "Southernjets Innanashnul."

It was used as a method of saying who you work for/hope to work for/secretly hate/etc without actually saying who you work for/hope to work for/secretly hate/etc.

Close. It was more about NOT saying who you work for as some companies have social media policies that prohibit that. Somebody working for SJI most certainly does NOT work for Delta, as those are obviously two separate air_lines.
