That is a national travesty.

It was one of the North Dakota jets that launched out of Langley AFB on 9/11. Agree a national travesty. But also back in the day, I used to see F-4s and F-105s either being scrapped or on the scrapping block, with faded Vietnam MiG kills red-star markings still on them. I need to go see the reamining F-4Ds that are still on the east side storage and see if any of those have Vietnam kills on them.

@MikeD

Are any of the 9/11 birds being preserved?

Two of the three North Dakota F-16s that launched out of Langley on 9/11 are on static display: one is in front of the Western Air Defense Sector HQ at McChord AFB, WA, the other is at Hector ANG base at Fargo, ND. Of the Massachusetts ANG F-15As that were launched and patrolled over NYC, I'm not certain if one of them is one of the many MASS F-15As here in the boneyard. Will research that.

The jet that's on display at Fargo, the pilot of that one on 9/11 is a friend of mine. Former NWA pilot.

That day was messed up alright. Tons of confusion going on, then the recall of civil aircraft whle we stayed airborne. It was enough confusion just down here in the southwest, as there were no air defense alert aircraft in Arizona (DMAs alert facility was part-time and unmanned). Nearest armed alert jets to Arizona were at RIV with the Fresno detachment F-16s of the California ANG, and at HMN with Houston detachent F-16s of the Texas ANG. Even armed F-4s out of HMN got airborne to patrol, though they weren't alert jets.

My buddy was telling me how the east coast confusion was over what was going on was just a complete mess.

It was a terrible day. We flew out of JFK that morning and diverted to DEN. I've read at some point the complete NORAD tapes. What a communication mess that was. Otis was ready to go and then halted, then launched. It must have been really frustrating not knowing what all the hell was happening for all of our air bases. And how the hell are our fighters supposed to identify/define the thousands of planes that were still in the skies, let alone what the other targets might be.
