Loiter means to shut it down for a non-emergency. You do it because it requires a bunch of fuel just to turn the compressor so if you are in a situation flying max endurance or in almost all cases at less than 40K of fuel onboard, your 3 engine max range below 18,000 feet is better than your 4 engine. Add to that the airspeed limit on the tankers due to the tank, we were saving about 800#s an hour.What does it mean to "loiter" an engine, and when/why would you do it?
