Crosswinds from Hell

As a non-pilot, I don't get why some of these aircraft went around after they had three points on the ground. Isn't the worst behind you at that point? (If I was a pax in a few of these, the crew would hear me scream "go around!" From seat 23B.)

The Ryan and Emerites aircraft were in much less precarious conditions and seemed to make the prudent choice to go around before they has wheel(s) down.

On a serious note, I'm very disappointed in how little crosswind correction you see guys doing. It's a wonder half those planes don't have the gear ripped off. Very poor pilots out there.

On a positive note, I'm glad to see some people exercising good judgement and going around. Never hurts to try again. Better than to have your plane being picked up in pieces.
Designed to do it, even on dry runways. Best to kick out what you can, but if the runway isn't dry, it's best to land in the crab.
 
What about holding in some aileron during the roll out and takeoff though. That's what I was looking at the whole time. I'm honestly surprised there wasn't any wing tips running along the pavement.

A lot of airplanes have spoilers that help with turning the aircraft and are linked to aileron input. So rolling in aileron during takeoff will pop a board on one wing and kill some lift, which isn't what you want when you are trying to take off.

I don't know why more people don't roll in wind correction after touchdown though. I see it here all the time and it puzzles me.

Falcon doesn't require aileron input after touchdown. Dassault actually recommends you don't, adds more weight to upwind wheel which exacerbates the aircrafts tendency to weather vane into wind.

Wing slung engines have nasty habit of scraping the runway, especially when it gets real sporty. In a perfect world where there is no gust or mechanical turbulence, you bet you can land lined up with the centerline. However when it is like the videos posted above you point the nose into the wind, put the mains on the runway, get the lift killed while the nosewheel comes down and then line up. Next to the wing box, the landing gear is up there as one of the toughest parts on the airplane and designed to take that kind of side loading. The wing tips and bottoms of the cowlings aren't meant to leave paint on the runway.
 
If I'm a passenger on one of those planes, please just go ahead and take me to the alternate. Those landings are crazy!
 
Back in my CFI days, I took off from DVT with winds from the north at about 7 kts. Somehow during 2 hours of doing the Valley Rally, the winds managed to pick up to about 330/45G55. I had to take the lannnuding back into DVT and needless to sa I feel like I mostly landed facing the tower at almost a complete stop. There was only one other plane that made it in that night and a couple others diverted to GEU. Definitely a learning a experience that I started to understand the meaning of, "just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe."
I know this, umm, guy who managed to put a 150 down on a runway 20 with winds out of the wsw at 37G50. Suprisingly, the plane wasn't broken and this, umm, guy managed to get it tied down without flipping over. "He" learned a great lesson that day 3 or so years ago about proper planning and not letting fuel get critical enough to the point of being locked into only one airport option. Live and learn..

Yeah, I'm not advocating flying the thing down in a slip. There were more than a few guys who kicked the rudder at the last minute though and managed not to side load the crap out of it though. That's the technique I use in the RJ because them wings and flaps do hang kind of low.

12 degrees of bank is when you get close to drag a wingtip on the RJ...the flaps aren't even an issue. Just fly normal crosswind technique...you will be fine. ZW had to tell people to knock that "kick it in at the last minute" deal off because guys were side loading it so bad. We tested it in the sim with a steady 50kt wind and were only at 9 degrees of bank.

It's not so much the forward or side slip it becomes a problem of deck angle. With most wing slung airplanes, (Airbus, 737, etc) the engines are in front of or next to the wheels. If you have a normal pitch attitude on landing that brings the engines up higher and thus you can bank steeper into the wind. When it is gusty and rough and you find yourself being rolled around a lot, you have a gust factor added to your Vref which makes for a lower deck angle at the start of the flare which in turns translates to less ground clearance for the engines. Couple that with the wind changing with the gusts and the mechanical turbulence and you can find yourself getting that upwind wing pushed down farther than allowable and, prang!

Those videos showed some gnarly winds too, if a Dash was having trouble keeping aligned with the centerline....

I suspect that they didn't feel they had adequate directional control. Better to try again rather than take the airplane off roading.
