Crosswinds from Hell

I admit. I am both impressed and terrified by this video. Apologies if it's already been shown, but as a piston-engine bugsmasher guy, I'm not even sure I'd go out on my bike in these winds let alone an airplane...

Y'all got bigger balls than I do...

I dunno. I don't wanna know. The RJ around 7:45 on the video is pretty terrifying.

Cannot imagine what it was like for the pax....

Back in my CFI days, I took off from DVT with winds from the north at about 7 kts. Somehow during 2 hours of doing the Valley Rally, the winds managed to pick up to about 330/45G55. I had to take the landing back into DVT and needless to say I feel like I mostly landed facing the tower at almost a complete stop. There was only one other plane that made it in that night and a couple others diverted to GEU. Definitely a learning a experience that I started to understand the meaning of, "just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe."

I hate these!
Worse for me was Ponta Delgada....landing downhill, 80 degree crosswinds at 50g65....no diverting from here...no options. By the time I came to a full stop I was, without a doubt, landing current!!

Damn! This is one of the coolest aviation videos I've ever seen. Some of those landings/takeoffs looked down right sketchy. That metro crew has balls of steel, major props. For those wondering, it is a pax metro, not freight. I wish we had audio from inside the cabin on that one.

There are quite a few videos from this airport during xwinds. Crazy stuff. Dusseldorf looks fun too.

Curious what you big shiny jet plane drivers do out there in the real world to practice for things like this...

With our bigger motors, E-6 is only allowed 5 degrees of roll at touchdown. Because of engine strikes back in the day, it's become part of our pilot currency sims to have two max crosswind, gusty, approaches and landings performed in the sim each quarter.

You guys do anything similar, or do y'all just wing it when it comes time to do it for real?
