I know we have a couple guys from each of these companies here at JC.

Just wondering if any of you could tell me the costs of a crashpad at each of the three companies' bases.

I was paying 180 in IAH and 190 in EWR. I had my own bed in both. But, I only stayed there 3-4 nights a month, so the cost outweighed the benefits. Id commute in the night before on the late flight, sleep in the crewroom and usually get an early showtime so it wasnt a big deal. I just hated shaving in the bathroom sink. A small price to pay to say a couple hundred bucks.

Is it common to sleep in the crewroom? I would rather do that than spend money on a crashpad if I have an early showtime.

Crew rooms are nice for a quick nap during a 1.5-2hr sit, but to actually sleep there. No thank you. They aren't that nice.

Crashpads and commutting just suck. Its the worst part of the job. Its money that you literally piss away just so you can work there. My goal is to live close to my base and commute daily. Hard to move myself and the wife on such crappy pay, but when it improves, thats my goal. The real kicker, is when you have a 5 on 2 off schedule. Have fun commuting, hope you're not married!

Why? I live in base. . .if I'm fortunate enough to be released to go and work for such a great airline :sarcasm:

Yeah, I know you live in base, but since you had those other airlines on there figured you were no longer considering ASA.

So, wanted to know if you were still considering them.

Sleeping in the crew room is a last resort thing. Ive been very fortunate that I have been able to work out a hotel through scheduling in return for some favor. Ive only slept in the crew room 3-4 times in 5 months. So, i consider that pretty good. You really dont get a good rest, and when rampers start rolling in at 4 am and you have a 7 am showtime, its a really long 3 hours. Spring for a crashpad if you have to. If you can pull it off, do without, but dont say I didnt warn ya. I moved to base so tonite will prob be my last night trying to find a hotel or sleepin in the crew room. At least until upgrade.

How about moving in base? I figure being young and unattached it shouldn't be too difficult.

Mine's 180 a month. I think it's worth it. We just got HBO. I'm watching some prostitute show on HBO On Demand.

Think again! Sleeping in the crew room should be a last resort thing, better done at the end of a trip when you don't really need to be well rested.
Nothing like starting a trip after having spent a night in the crew room. It doesn't get quiet till late, then maybe you get 2-3 hours of quiet all night. No shower in the morning....Maybe it's just me, but I like to start a trip feeling as good as I can because I know the next 4 days are potentially going to kick my butt.

Plus, crew rooms don't tend to be the most sanitary places. The mice and roaches in MEM will pick you up out of your chair and move you. You get what you pay for in that case....probably some extra.

$100-300 depending on amenities is probably pretty average in MSP, DTW and MEM. Not sure about ATL since no one's really started moving down there yet.

I had a crash pad in Kew Gardens when I was based in NY. The first month I was based out there, I hadn't found a crash pad yet, and I had the dubious joy of having non-commutable day trips! So it was either pay for a hotel room every night I had to be out there, or suck it up and sleep in the JFK crew lounge. I slept on two chairs pushed together with my roller bag under my butt, my rolled up uniform jacket as my pillow and my overcoat as my blanket. If you can avoid having to sleep like that, DO IT. I'd commute home for my days off and I was a zombie with a killer backache.

I spent many nights in the LGA crew room too, on nights when I'd get in from a trip at 11 or 12, and be commuting out first thing in the morning. For that, it's not worth schlepping all the way to the crash pad, to be there for like, 3 hours, then go all the way back to the airport. So I'd just camp out in the crew lounge then too. Sometimes I'd get lucky and get a couch! Sometimes I'd get not so lucky and have to sleep on two rolling office chairs pushed together. Which works surprisingly well, as long as you don't try to roll over, or the chairs roll apart and you fall on the floor. Where the mice and roaches will carry you away just like the ones Steve mentioned in MEM!

Im considering moving to Atlanta depending on who I get hired with. Alot of regionals have a base there.

Yeah if you're young, single and willing/able to move - you'll be a perfect fit in this Regional crapshoot. Despite the pay being low, as long as you don't have an enoromous amount of debt, it shouldn't be too difficult to move.

In my case, my wife is a specialized teacher in New Jersey. Not only does she make very good money here, but for her to recertify in another state will cost more money. Her job is not easily transferable. In this case, her career goes before mine in a sense. She has the stability, the best benefits and certainly the better pay, so her job dictates where we live.

Later on, like say if I get hired at Southwest - the cards will change. We'll move in base, like Baltimore, and I'll work/pay the bills/take care of her while she works on getting a new job.

Thats the plan anyway....we'll see.
