I had a crash pad in Kew Gardens when I was based in NY. The first month I was based out there, I hadn't found a crash pad yet, and I had the dubious joy of having non-commutable day trips! So it was either pay for a hotel room every night I had to be out there, or suck it up and sleep in the JFK crew lounge. I slept on two chairs pushed together with my roller bag under my butt, my rolled up uniform jacket as my pillow and my overcoat as my blanket. If you can avoid having to sleep like that, DO IT. I'd commute home for my days off and I was a zombie with a killer backache.
I spent many nights in the LGA crew room too, on nights when I'd get in from a trip at 11 or 12, and be commuting out first thing in the morning. For that, it's not worth schlepping all the way to the crash pad, to be there for like, 3 hours, then go all the way back to the airport. So I'd just camp out in the crew lounge then too. Sometimes I'd get lucky and get a couch! Sometimes I'd get not so lucky and have to sleep on two rolling office chairs pushed together. Which works surprisingly well, as long as you don't try to roll over, or the chairs roll apart and you fall on the floor. Where the mice and roaches will carry you away just like the ones Steve mentioned in MEM!
