Personally I don't feel that religion has a seat in the cockpit but I respect other's rights to believe what ever they want.

Hopefully you have never or will never find yourself in a life and death situation where your own stated belief is put to the test.

Not sure what the appropriate sanction should be for gross negligence in the cockpit. Putting people in prison for non-violent offenses seems like such a waste.

Yeah, he messed up, but prison is a bit much.
Messed up? He did nothing and lots of people died! When you're acting as PIC and accepting the amount of responsibility when do you cross the line of being criminally negligent? I'm assuming you've read the final report on this crash. After the first engine quit he just drifted down fat, dumb and happy.

Do you have a source? I'd like to read more about it.

happens and people are at fault most of the time.
What I don't want to see is a job that I love that relies on machinery and when the mechinary breaks down I don't need a 10 year prison sentence on my mind when I am trying to make the right decsion.

"You just had an engine failure hot shot. Choose wisely, you may get 10 years. "
As if the threat of prison is going to make encourage me to make the right decision. I doubt it.

He is not the first pilot to panic and make the wrong decision. Him making the wrong decision by praying is not a factor. Negligence is negligence.

IF people design it, make it or use it, somewhere along the line, the failure can be attributed to people being at fault.

Prove it - not all are Muslim!

Not to mention Allah is Arabic for God. Arab Christians pray to Allah as well.

Double FAIL!

Ok, we don't agree. My point is they ran out of fuel. They crashed a perfectly good airplane. The error started at mtx and ended with a pilot not doing the very basics. He was negligent in his job. He killed people. People that kill people, even through negligence are criminally responsible.

How's that?

I would like to read the report on this accident, if anyone has a link.

I think you guys are relying on the media too much. Remember how bad it sounds when things go wrong here in the US? Do you imagine that foreign media is any better? It's controversial, that why it's prominent in that piece. The fact that he was praying did not have anything to do with the crash. If it's the same crash as below, which I think it is, he ran out of fuel 20 miles from the airport at 4000 ft. The youtube clip said that the wrong fuel gauge was installed in the aircraft, causing there to be less fuel than they thought. I can't confirm that, obviously. Sounds to me like the crew did everything they could before they ditched.

On flightglobal.com, March 19, was an article on this subject and covered some recent findings on the effectiveness of criminal prosecution of pilots and controllers.

It was a doctoral thesis study by two Cypriots, one a law professor and another an airline pilot.

The study found that criminal prosecution had negative effects on aviation safety overall.
