Corpie at Torrance

...and depart VFR only to request an IFR clearance once airborne. It's pure entertainment to listen to these type of exchanges while being vectored to DIXIE!

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing to do, but they didn’t bother getting their route while on the ground first and so now are 30 miles in the wrong direction in the wrong airspace counter to the flow of all the other IFR traffic

I would also point out you need to commit to the VFR. You can't jut barge off and expect to pick up a clearance at 1,500'.

I have effectively used TEC, yes, in a jet, but like VFR, you need to commit to it and plan to be spat out on the other side of East Bumblefrack Approach, 4 or 5 ARSAs or TRSAs down the line. Treat any shortcuts or climbs as a bonus.

Next thing you know, you've been autoreported to the FAA for going over 250 below the class Bravo. "The controller told me to ignore that reg" will not go over well.

These situations where the entity that made the rule is the one pressuring you to break it make me think of that scene towards the end of Fight Club. The protagonist tries to stop what he put into motion, but the disciplined soldiers of Project Mayhem remain ever faithful.

FAA: Maintain 250
Pilot: Unable, below the Bravo
FAA: That's okay, I'm authorizing you to fly 250
Pilot: Unable. You said you'd say that.
FAA: Listen, I'm the FAA and am giving you a direct order, fly 250!
Pilot: You said you'd definitely say that. You said that if anyone interferes with Regulatory Compliance, we get their balls, sir.

Yeah. If anything ever went sideways...let's say a failure to cross DANDY at 1500. The FAA gets the two'fer when they are looking to violate you. Doing to 250 below the class bravo and a loss of separation.
