Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing to do, but they didn’t bother getting their route while on the ground first and so now are 30 miles in the wrong direction in the wrong airspace counter to the flow of all the other IFR traffic

I would also point out you need to commit to the VFR. You can't jut barge off and expect to pick up a clearance at 1,500'.

I have effectively used TEC, yes, in a jet, but like VFR, you need to commit to it and plan to be spat out on the other side of East Bumblefrack Approach, 4 or 5 ARSAs or TRSAs down the line. Treat any shortcuts or climbs as a bonus.
