You mean “no way he could ever earn a paycheck…”When I listened, I kept saying “ there is no way this guy needs a paycheck from flying”…. Reminds me of the old honey badger video.
“Maintain 250.” “Unable, below the bravo.” “I AUTHORIZE YOU!” (the thing the reg says controllers can’t do). Sorry, you just gave me the nervous twitches. I greatly love how bad the flow into TEB is these days because it makes SWF seem so much better for the pax.I unfortunately work with a couple guys who are the ATC equivalent.
I’m not at all defending this guy. He needs an emergency revocation, 709, and likely a look at the DPE who typed him (I’ve heard of “you’ll pass your ride or your money back” DPEs for NearJets).
With that said, I get the frustration. I’ve never popped off like that on a controller but the FAA does stuff to inconveniently located GA airports that airlines would absolutely refuse to touch for safety reasons.
Go to PWK when winds are out of the north and you’re gonna be circling in MVFR or worse to land 34 and being told to keep it tight. Go to SMO and enjoy sitting while waiting for LAX to allow a booger to get flicked out of their nose. And if the winds are different or they’re creatively interpreting “10 kts tailwind” (as frequently happens), you’ll land downhill with a tailwind and you’ll like it. Or you’ll go to BUR. I never went to TOA because of how extreme the IFR restrictions are. Apparently I should’ve just said the world revolved around me and just sent it, being a corpie and whatnot.
“First come first serve” is absolutely not a thing, and with the airlines almost literally owning the FAA I see a system like England in the future. Want flight following? What’s your credit card number and expiration date?

Or a foreign airline piles one in at SFO and then they all have to get an IFR approach of some sort?Ehh.
He is flying a straight-wing Citation that comes over the fence at the same speed as my Extra 300. A visual pattern is absolutely in the realm of reasonability for anything that can get into TOA, especially a 172 with some RC jet engines attached to it. The guy was an insufferable POS. Even if he did need/want something else, he could have just said unable and handled it properly.
If I can turn a 3-mile final in a 737, he can do it in a 525. I will make the argument further. He could have not accepted and said unable, that is fine, but if he wants to pretend a circling maneuver is done greater than 3 miles and that he cannot do it in a 525, he shouldn't have a type rating, or the circling limitation should be applied.
If you are flying directly towards a cell, and ATC says unable left deviations due to military airspace, then declare an emergency. This guy can't fly an airplane like everyone else, so he threatens to, and eventually does declare an emergency so he can get the RNAV?
Come on man...
I think we’ve both seen the “customer service” FSI provides. There are guys they also push through that shouldn’t be in jets. I’d even say owner/operators shouldn’t be allowed to operate anything over 12.5…make the fireballs a bit smaller. But for the DPEs you know, I could rebut with some I’ve also worked with. It seems like the FAA’s got wind of the pencil-whipping and at least a lot of the SPE in-aircraft training is going away but you can absolutely toss a lot of money at a training provider and walk away with a type.Pump those breaks.
I know a few DPE's for turbojets and they do NOT have lower standards than FS or CAE.
They are usually former TCE's and have a higher standard due to the extra scrutiny by insurance companies.
I've seen their POA's and they're no joke and UNSAT quite a few.
I agree tho... revoke that the Citation's license IMMEDIATELY.
Owner/Operators are the ABSOLUTE worst.

“Fun” fact, all 3 of those airports have had major incidents/accidents recentlyThey do the same thing to inconveniently located airports that primarily serve airlines. LGA ILS 22 circle 13 in a snowstorm. DCA river visual at night at minimum visibility (3sm). EWR ILS 22L circle 29 (“direct the numbers, keep it tight, you’re racing an A330 landing straight in 22L”).
Ehh.
