Corpie at Torrance

This reminds me of when Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) flew to an airport in Texas and landed on a closed runway after flaring over workers and construction equipment. He used his political muscle to create the “Airman’s Bill of Rights” (or some tripe like that), and never had to take his medicine. This guy will absolutely invoke Inhofe and some kind of “abuse by the system.”

I unfortunately work with a couple guys who are the ATC equivalent.
“Maintain 250.” “Unable, below the bravo.” “I AUTHORIZE YOU!” (the thing the reg says controllers can’t do). Sorry, you just gave me the nervous twitches. I greatly love how bad the flow into TEB is these days because it makes SWF seem so much better for the pax.

I’m not at all defending this guy. He needs an emergency revocation, 709, and likely a look at the DPE who typed him (I’ve heard of “you’ll pass your ride or your money back” DPEs for NearJets).

With that said, I get the frustration. I’ve never popped off like that on a controller but the FAA does stuff to inconveniently located GA airports that airlines would absolutely refuse to touch for safety reasons.

Go to PWK when winds are out of the north and you’re gonna be circling in MVFR or worse to land 34 and being told to keep it tight. Go to SMO and enjoy sitting while waiting for LAX to allow a booger to get flicked out of their nose. And if the winds are different or they’re creatively interpreting “10 kts tailwind” (as frequently happens), you’ll land downhill with a tailwind and you’ll like it. Or you’ll go to BUR. I never went to TOA because of how extreme the IFR restrictions are. Apparently I should’ve just said the world revolved around me and just sent it, being a corpie and whatnot.

“First come first serve” is absolutely not a thing, and with the airlines almost literally owning the FAA I see a system like England in the future. Want flight following? What’s your credit card number and expiration date?

Ehh.

He is flying a straight-wing Citation that comes over the fence at the same speed as my Extra 300. A visual pattern is absolutely in the realm of reasonability for anything that can get into TOA, especially a 172 with some RC jet engines attached to it. The guy was an insufferable POS. Even if he did need/want something else, he could have just said unable and handled it properly.

If I can turn a 3-mile final in a 737, he can do it in a 525. I will make the argument further. He could have not accepted and said unable, that is fine, but if he wants to pretend a circling maneuver is done greater than 3 miles and that he cannot do it in a 525, he shouldn't have a type rating, or the circling limitation should be applied.

If you are flying directly towards a cell, and ATC says unable left deviations due to military airspace, then declare an emergency. This guy can't fly an airplane like everyone else, so he threatens to, and eventually does declare an emergency so he can get the RNAV?

Come on man...

Pump those breaks.
I know a few DPE's for turbojets and they do NOT have lower standards than FS or CAE.
They are usually former TCE's and have a higher standard due to the extra scrutiny by insurance companies.

I've seen their POA's and they're no joke and UNSAT quite a few.

I agree tho... revoke that the Citation's license IMMEDIATELY.

Owner/Operators are the ABSOLUTE worst.

Or a foreign airline piles one in at SFO and then they all have to get an IFR approach of some sort?

We’re in violent agreement here. The plane is absolutely capable of it. But the pilot isn’t. The system has to cater to the lowest common denominator. And the kid glove handling that lets the foreign airline cadets I trained fly into JFK (and only gum up the works a majority of the time) is how airlines that don’t meet FAA standards stay out of the news here. It shouldn’t be necessary for GA pilots in jets—theoretically training and checking is to ATP standards. But ABBA said something about it being a rich man’s world.

This guy will pile it in someday if his certificates aren’t taken away. They need to be. But the ATC system absolutely requires higher risk procedures for GA to access satellite airports to keep the airline shareholders happy. Not budging on that.

I think we’ve both seen the “customer service” FSI provides. There are guys they also push through that shouldn’t be in jets. I’d even say owner/operators shouldn’t be allowed to operate anything over 12.5…make the fireballs a bit smaller. But for the DPEs you know, I could rebut with some I’ve also worked with. It seems like the FAA’s got wind of the pencil-whipping and at least a lot of the SPE in-aircraft training is going away but you can absolutely toss a lot of money at a training provider and walk away with a type.

And he could’ve just made a simple phone call after he landed and ironed everything out, yet he wants to broadcast his butthurt over the air like a Karen for all to hear like a self appointed big shot. Honestly, it was incredibly embarrassing to listen to as a fellow pilot. Could only imagine how “Kennedy Steve” at JFK would’ve handled it in a way only a true New Yorker can….🤣😳

The pilot complains to ATC on the initial arrival like they personally designed the arrival/approach procedure just to piss him off. The next day he’s still wound up and looking for another confrontation and shockingly tells ATC how “awesome” they are as he leaves. His massive ego and anger issues are gonna get himself and his passengers killed one day…soon!

IDK….I’ve learned that sometimes during conflict, a calm/pleasant and understanding demeanor gets you farther in life than the, all too common nowadays, immediately spring loaded to the pissed off attitude position..

Good to be retired…..don’t miss the circus anymore that just seems to be getting worse.

BTW….every controller maintained a calm professional demeanor. Kudos to them..well done!

Yeah, FS isn't as elite as they think they are. Seen worse tho...

The FA came down on the DPE's in certain Districts, rightfully so.

They do the same thing to inconveniently located airports that primarily serve airlines. LGA ILS 22 circle 13 in a snowstorm. DCA river visual at night at minimum visibility (3sm). EWR ILS 22L circle 29 (“direct the numbers, keep it tight, you’re racing an A330 landing straight in 22L”).

“Fun” fact, all 3 of those airports have had major incidents/accidents recently 😬

Absolutely it’s doable. Agreed. Used to beat up the traffic pattern doing touch and goes in a C550, with a departure end turning climb to inside downwind, configure, then come off the abeam, base to final for another T&G. Rinse, repeat. The thing flies akin to a T-37 that has a passenger cabin. A 172 with jet engines, as you accurately describe it. If this guy can’t handle that, then he shouldn’t be in it.

737 is also easily capable of a traffic pattern. Had a go around one time in the -200. Tower wants to hand me off to departure for vectors back, i just ask the other pilot to request departure end closed for a full stop. Nothing requiring any hard maneuvering, just an easy turning climb to the downwind at flaps 5. Configure the rest on downwind, and finish the pattern to a landing. Almost takes no thought.

This guy definitely has many issues, to put it lightly.

They’re some of the busiest airports in the country. Of course they have. It doesn’t change the fact that you’d have just as many complaints about ATC procedures if you flew a 737 instead of a biz jet.
