Coolest Arrival / Departure / Airport

EVERYTIME I have flown into SAN they have been fogged in. So the cool part of that approach for me has always been desending into the fog.

Popping out just above the hill and then spying downtown which isn't really at a distance!

Ah, you have to love the marine layer. It can be cloudy at my house, but 10 minutes inland, it's sunny.

Nope! I think it was just how the DEN pairings were when I got MRY overnights. SLC steals all of our good flying during certain times of year!

Whatever, Nick...I know you are excited to start flying to BFL this September!!! At least I'll show you where all the good mexican food places are or maybe some awesome Basque restaurants. Also, is that Guy LeDouche from MXC on your avatar?

A couple more of my favorite airports to fly into: BZN, JAC (on a nice visual day that takes you by the Grand Teton,) and the VOR-DME 35 into LIH.

I havent done many of these at night but departing Boulder City is pretty cool at night. You take off and climb above the ridges and your wacked with the blinding lights of Vegas. Very cool

And now, my list....

DCA river visual (getting a lot of votes there, I see.)
DCA takeoff 1 (just turn left, people!!)
LGA expressway visual
JFK Canarsie approach 13's
MRY VOR 28's
ACK (hit the brakes!/all those short-field takeoffs we used to teach pays off) :)
PSP (coming from the west you have to split those mountains and then dive)
STS (when it's foggy, it's foggy!!)
WLW (at night on approach, you see nothing between you and the airport but the moon's relfection, reminds me of the Everglades out there)
SLU/MBJ (runway right near the water/sharp left after takeoff)
NEWARK 7 (especially the ones that take you over Central Park)

I think that covers it...:)

As a passenger, the Lemon Creek arrival into Juneau.:)

No such thing, except maybe in a helicopter. There used to be a Lemon Creek departure, but that went away about 10 years ago.

Perhaps you're thinking of the RNAV RNP to RWY 26 which makes its final turn to the runway over the mouth of Lemon Creek.

Thats it then. I guess the locals around here just refer to it as the Lemon Creek arrival.:)

Just did Jackson Hole (JAC) from the north with a beautiful view of the Tetons to the west. Digging back a bit I remember a great visual into Gibraltar circling around the rock and trying to stay clear of Spanish airspace, with cars waiting for you to land before they can cross the runway onto or off of Gib.

I am down for some local flavor. I almost had a BFL overnight several weeks back, but got sick before the trip.

Guy LeDouche it is and you will respect him :D Vic & Kenny are the bomb too!

I will have to agree with BZN and JAC - great places on clear VFR days!

LDA/DME 25 into EGE.
ILS or Vis 4R into MDW with downtown Chicago in your face.
Any approach into GCN.
3M3, Collegedale, TN, northeast of Chattanooga.
SNA 19 DP.

Elk City, ID.

Runway 14/35
Dimensions: 2600 x 150 ft. / 792 x 46 m
MAY NOT BE MOWED TO FULL WIDTH.
Surface: turf/gravel, in poor condition
Operational restrictions: IS A CURVED RY.

I'll try to take a picture next time I'm there!

Always like flying into SAN for runway 27 on a nice day. Fly too low on short final and you will leave skid marks on the roof of a parking garage. The departure is great too.

I've only done it once and the weather was perfect, but CEC, Crecent City is really beautiful. Especially approaching runway 35. The ocean is maybe a 100 yards from the runway and a large rock island sits not far off the shore, slightly displaced from the approach path. Just a cool approach when the WX is nice.

MRY is pretty when you are not handflying the ILS.

Love the Point Reyes arrival into San Fran when the WX is nice. Especially in the late afternoon so the sun hits the Golden Gate and downtown just right. (Not too low cause then you have to land with it in your eyes and that just plain stinks.)

West Yellowstone MT is another one of my favorites. The last 15 min of that flight affords a wonderful view of the Grand Tetons as you approach the Yellowstone basin followed by all of Yellowstone Park on the right side of the aircraft as you get closer.

Wow 4 pages of replies and no mention of the VOR-DME to 13L at JFK...where are all the rest of my Comair guys...nothing better than shooting a VOR approach down to 800 ft and following a bunch of lights positioned on a highway and a hotel, put there by the lower bidder

I don't know about anyone else (or whether its already been mentioned), but the straight in final approach to home base is my favorite of all time, because that means I'm home and get to sleep in my own bed.

Coolest departure is off of ACV off 32 on the HOCUT departure. The runway ends at a cliff that goes down to the beach, and you make a left turnout over the cliff and water.

Coolest arrivals:

Visual to 35 in CEC, the water goes right up to the runway and there are a lot of large rock formations in the water that you fly right next to (not above).

Red Barn visual to OXR, a steep visual with two 90 degree turns over landmarks with specific altitude and speed targets, finished with a flaps 45 landing. This one is a custom approach for my airline.

Night circle to land on 20 at IYK with strong wind. Most people hate it, I love it.

Circle to land on 1R at SFO, self explanitory for anyone who's been there, whether they've done that approach or not (I've done it twice).

Arrival: KJAC 19, right wing basically scrapes the Tetons.
Departure: KDCA 1 (at night with the National Mall all light up)

here in the phoenix area there is a cool approach. the town of kearny has an airport that butts up to two mountains. it is an awesome approach and i would suggest it to anyone.
