Continental hiring situation

Yes there were four Riddle Rats, all of whom have turned out to be good pilots (with good coaching). It was an experiment, never to be repeated. All four were the top of the class and knew they won the lottery. They are grateful everyday and eager to learn. Now they all have lots of hours. I have flown with every one of them and can say they turned out to be really good pilots.

OK, Spirit only hired low timers according to Baronman! I'll mention that to my buddy who flew Airforce 2. Every airline hires questionable people. Heck Spirit hired a guy who definately had some misconnects in his wires. He left. Guess where he went? Southernjets. He's their problem now.

Ok not sure why your getting all defensive here. The point was simply that Spirit will hire lower time pilots than other comparable airlines. There are proven instances of this. No reason to be upset.

I don't think he is getting upset.

What he is saying is that, there was indeed a period of time, proven instance, where Spirit hired low time guys. That time has come and gone, for now.

I know several Eagle FO's from ORD that went to Spirit not too long ago.. 0 turbine PIC.. between 3-4K total time only SIC

There's no doubt in my mind that it's going to be bedlam.

Imagine being able to get in on the ground floor for that. I have a buddy who is on at Airways right now. They're projecting 5-7 years to hold 190 captain for him, 7-9 years for Airbus captain.

That's holy crap fast, and is going to be even worse over at American.

In 1999 I was told on the first day of initial at Airways that we would all be Captains in 5 years. For my colleagues who went back after the furlough, they are just now able to hold E190 Captain in Philly... Which made me a little jealous until I realized I make more than any E190 Captain there and most of the A320 Captains. That tempered my jealousy a little bit... Just a little though.

My point is, don't discount airline management's ability to screw up a perfectly good projected upgrade time. ;-)

:) Heck, when my old man was hired at USAir in 1989, upgrade was projected at 3 years. Here we are, 2011, and he has never sat in the left seat*. He has, however, been furloughed 4 times.

*Like Zap mentioned, he can hold the left seat on the 190 right now but that would be a pay cut.

FWIW this hiring boom that everyone is talking about is history repeating itself. Ever talk to a real senior pilot at a a legacy. Had several tell me that they were told the same thing when all the WWII pilots would start retiring. Then it was when all the Korean War pilots start retiring. Now it's all the Vietnam era pilots. I think that there will be hiring but not how most think it will play out.
I got hired at JB with around 4500 TT with no TPIC. I got really lucky. I know of 3 others like me with no TPIC. All of the guys in my class had thousands of TPIC.

Wasn't there a female type from Riddle that had a little accident coming into ACY? Then resigned from the company? I keep hearing that crazy story from my two buddies at Spirit (one flying, one non flying), there also word that a few left and went overseas with there A320 type? Not here to bash Riddle just an honest question...

I also heard of them picking up a few of the "higher" time Cape Air pilots as well?

I don't know of any accident (and I would have known since I am based there) and all of the four Riddle Carlson experiments are still with us. Some people left for overseas when they were furloughed. Some came back. Some liked playing in the sand and stayed overseas. Some were from countries other than the USA and stayed overseas.

I haven't met anyone from Cape Air. They may exist; I haven't met them. Since everyone new goes to ACY, I get to meet most new FO's. I did fly with a new FO who came from Eagle. He had three internal recs. That same week, I also flew with a 17 year DHL CA who was in that same new hire class, also with an internal rec.

As with any airline hiring, it's who you know. Get to know people and get the recs. And refrain from presenting yourself poorly on the internet and annoying those who could give you recs. :)

How is acy as a base overall?

Keep in mind that many pilots will be retiring before hitting 65, like what is happening at AA right now. All in all the future does look very promising one way or another. Unless everybody starts to purchase A380s and staff less pilots, there will be a demand to replace all the retirements + increased flying. An event of 9/11 proportions may slow things down, but will not prevent it.

Accident was the wrong word I suppose... either way I was just curious.
