Continental Express pilot misplaces gun at KGRR

I was not a proponent of the FFDO program, but after seeing some videos in training of hijack scenarios and some of the FFDO tactics I was converted. We have a couple at my airline and I think it's a pretty good idea.

Knowing a little about what goes on when FFDO's commute, I would bet my next check that this was not the FFDO's fault.

To me, the whole thing is a placebo for the travelling masses. I haven't seen any of the training materials, etc. That may change my mind. If the pilots are taken by surprise, how long is it gonna take to get the gun out? I doubt if the FFDO is sitting in the seat polishing it the whole flight. Another advantage a potential baddie has is leverage. This was demonstrated to me by a SWA pilot about a year ago. He had me sit in the seat, turn around and pretend I was going to shoot him with my bin pin (hey, it KINDA looks like a gun, only MUCH MUCH smaller). He side stepped towards the jumpseat and disarmed me over the top of the chair.

I think pilots should wear six shooters on holsters at their waist, have a wide brimmed western hat and have spurs too.

That would be cool!

I probably would

... after all, the whole job is really just push a button and the plane does everything, right???

From what I have been told by a regional pilot who had been going through the training, the pilot should have plenty of time to pull out a gun, push back his seat and get ready. Although the new cockpit doors probably can't keep the terrorist out, they will delay the terrorists from getting in long enough for any pilot with a simi-active brain to be ready. You can't be disarmed if the terrorist is already dead. In my view, I would have dropped his terrorist butt before he could get any part of his/her body in the door.

Just some food for thought I guess

Just like the gate agents think! We just push the "Atlanta" button, taxi out and press 'execute'!

To tell you the truth, there is a few agents I work with that probably think that. Unbelievable I tell ya.

What about those bean bag guns the SWAT teams use. They wont break through anything and clearly will knock anyone down to the ground and in pain for a few minutes.

Otherwise, Pellet guns? Paintball guns? Dart Guns? Nerf Guns?

WHo needs metal bullets ripping through your fuselage at FL350

i watched a show called "mythbusters", i think it was on the discovery channel. they pressurized an aircraft and shot a bullet into the side of the fuselage. simulating a gunshot at altitude. the myth was that the aircraft would tear apart possibly sucking passengers out. this did not happen. the aircraft remained intact.

The amunition used for in aircraft operation is a special type that is designed to penetrate soft tissue, not the airframe itself. All of the other options you listed lack one improtant component: they wont kill the guy, and killing him and his friends is what you want to do.
