Congress agrees to 1500hr min for airlines.

Just a sidenote, the ICTZ is another reason I don't fly to South America very often. Man, that's some serious work having to deal with that! I keep thinking I'm going wake up on an island with a smoke monster if I'm not careful.
 
Yeah, C206 and PA32, the boss does it in the Navajo too, pretty standard for this style of work. We have offices in PAGY, PAHN, PAOH, PAJN and PAGS. We usually average around .4 - .5 per day per leg, with freight, pax, and mail in scheduled service.

In the month of June, I worked 322 duty hours, flew about 125hrs, and did 260 legs. That was the busiest month, but this month isn't too shabby either.

He and I used to go to Kodiak every Sept. for a week to fish for Silvers, we flew DAL into Anc. then took Mark Air to Kodiak, but I think Mark Air went out of business a long time ago, right? He liked it so much up there that when he retired he bought the lodge but I havn't been up to see him yet.
 
Good to see it's back up to 1500 hours. There are plenty of ways to get flight time outside of part 121. Pay at those jobs will go way down. Part 135 first officers will probably be paying for the flight time. That sucks, but regional airline pay will have to go up to attract pilots and reduce attrition. Pay will have to remain higher because the supply of 1500 hour first officers will always be low. I'm guessing about a 20% pay increase at regionals if this goes into effect.

They said they are going to fix 121 then look at 135. So maybe 135 will get improved work rules.

We don't fly there, but you can get to Homer (PAHO) on Era which is CASS, its about a 30min flight on them. It beats the 5hr drive. Grant flies there too, I don't know if they'll let you non-rev in the Caravan, but they're another option.

Kodiak you've got Era and Alaska if you like too, then down there if you wanted to bounce around the island, check out Servant air, they're a good outfit.

You're really gonna say this guy shares the NAS with us and it's a terrible thing because he didn't understand when he should have the pumps on?

I would put money on it that he is a better pilot than me, and I'm a "low time" professional pilot that flies in some of the busiest airspace in the US.

This thread will never die, but I'm just saying that was a pretty sad argument.

1. When there are a lot of people willing and able to do a job, that job generally doesn't pay well[/] - There are always fresh low time pilots wanting to jump to regionals so there is a constant supply

2. Specialized skills required - lets face it, getting your PPL-IR-Comm (even CFI at certain places) is easy

3. Unpleasantness of a job - SJS blocks out this one completely

4. Demand for services that the job fulfills varies but generally high

1. There are far fewer 1500hr pilots than there are people with the ability to buy 250hrs and a commercial certificate...so with this rule change supply would decrease (maybe not immediately, but it would in the long run).

2. Same thing--it's easy to get a AMEL, but to stick it out for 1500 hours is a lot more difficult than getting a commercial certificate. It would weed out a ton of people that were getting hired before who either didn't have the desire or ability.

To your #2 point- I find that we have a lot of guys that finally get to the regional level (Finally, meaning they got their 300-500 hrs), then realized the grass wasn't all that green, and left for either a lateral move, or left altogether to get a job in another field with a predictable QOL/Pay.

Do the ALPA rules address circadian swaps? Working from 5am-2pm on day one and 3pm-12am on day two is physiologically stressful, but I'm not sure if anyone is addressing that...

Can somebody confirm whether or not this bill would decrease the required minimums for a few flying schools like Riddle? If they seriously make everybody have 1500 hours except the people who go through a select college program that is ridiculous. The whole point of this bill is to keep people from pilot mills from graduating and getting in the airlines right away with wet certs.

I'm pretty sure this isn't completely passed yet but you can be sure that this bill is being voted on by people that have absolutely no idea what they're doing. So yes 1500 will probably pass, unless there's money thrown at them. And the colleges will probably have lower flight mins, because they will throw money at them, thus defeating the whole purpose of what gov is trying to do. That's your gobernament at work. But on the other hand, get ready for mass hiring in 5 years, airlines will be begging.

Colleges will lobby to get the minimums down. Last I heard it wasn't sure how much but it will be there.

That is crap though. I kind of almost understand why 141 gets away with 190 rather than 250 on the commercial(and whatever less on the others to), but on 121 or 135 for that matter, graduating from a 141 school should not matter by the time you get close to the minimums. Going to a 141 school will have absolutely nothing to do with anything about your flying by the time you get to 800 or 1500 hours.

It's a bandaid for a situation and it isn't even covering what it needs to cover. What's missing with the 1500 rule is an aviation education, which is actually quite valuable. Pt 61 teaches the fundamental aviation knowledge material, a college course takes it further..

Lots of low time hires are supporting this 1500 hour rule with the "well, I did okay but other's may crash" type of attitude. Congrats on getting to the top of the ladder. You rock.

It's not that bad. When I first began my flight training, instructors were buliding up 2500hrs before they were leaving for the regionals. When I first started at the gig I'm at now, pilots were using it to get from 1200hrs to 1500hrs while building multi time.

The hiring of anyone less than 1500hrs was only a freakish fluke anyways.

I have yet to fly with a Aviation College guy who was any better than a straight 61 or small school 141 guy when it came to ADM or stick and rudder skills in the jet. Sure they could tell me all about high altitude weather and air crash investigation and how a VOR worked but mostly in their first couple of hundred hours they couldn't think their way out of a wet paper bag. Same as every other low time guy just getting into bigger/faster operations.

You're right, the 1500 hour requirement is a bandaid for the bigger problem that anybody can pay their way into an airline job and there is very little if any screening. That said, I'll take every little bit of band aid I can in preventing guys that have no business in the pointy end of a jet (or big prop) from being there.

I personally agree that the 1500 hour rule is a great first step. I can attest to the fact that a pilot with <1500 hours is going to have alot of work cut out for himself going to the 121 world. If you're having a hard time seeing the justification of a stringent hour policy for pilots just look for other examples. Off the top of my head, you don't see high school basketball players going straight to the NBA. (Except for the fluke here and there i.e. Lebron James). No, they gain experience in college first.
