Commuting...How hard?

It was said in jest. In all seriousness, I only take people who I find attractive in my jumpseat. If you are an fugly mofo, then I'm sorry. There should be another flight around shortly. You should realize that being ugly brings down the average attractivness of pilots everywhere, and is a detriment to our continuous pursuit of poonanny. I happen to have a particular affinity for feet, which is clearly evident from my avatar. She happens to be a regular commuter, and is always welcome on my jumpseat.

We will not be able to make advances in a pilot's ability to accomplish horizontal (or whatever direction you so choose) fitness unless we take a stand. I encourage you to join me in my decision to ban ugly pilots from the jumpseat.

That is decidedly not a pilot's shoe. And you KNOW we have a few attractive female pilots. They may have crappy personalities, but rumor has it (ok, you told me) they are freaks in bed. (speaking of that, did you ever call her?)

And I don't really know what all the FAs feet look like. It's all about the ankles though. All of our FAs weight too much to have ankles like that. (And before Amber or one of the Cougars yells at me, I'm kidding... sort off).
 
I'm commuting from Salt Lake City to Newark right now. To say the commute sucks is to be extremely polite.

That being said, I've only got two non stop flights a day on most days (sometimes three, like today, which makes this commute pretty much way better on those days), which means I'm leaving Salt Lake at 10:00 a.m. the day BEFORE my reserve block starts to make sure I can get to Newark.

So THIS commute completely sucks, and I wouldn't recommend it anybody (though there are 5 other guys from my class that are doing the exact same commute, it's awesome). At the same time, though, once I'm based in LAX with my company I'll have something like 12 non stop flights a day and instead of flying 4.5 hours to work, it's more like 1.5 hours. That's almost like driving to work after doing this commute! I can easily commute in the first day of reserver if I have a noon phone availability and leave the last day of reserve and not burn any extra days off. Even if I had to come in the day before and leave the day after, I can leave at like 8:00 p.m. the night before and be home at the butt crack of dawn the next day.

So it's hard to say, "ALL COMMUTES SUCK!" because it's simply not true. Some commutes suck, and some are doable. SLC-ATL? You can probably hack that one. Personally you couldn't pay me to live in Atlanta. I like living in Salt Lake too much, and the girl won't be leaving there anytime soon so I might as well get used to commuting.

I used to commute from IND to LGA/JFK when I was displaced/marooned out there in the summer of '02. It was a horrible commute. Double leg, full flights, it sucked. BUT, if I wanted my job back, I had to accept recall, and in my recall class I was only able to hold LGA. I put my transfer to ORD in the second I had DECS access. But instead of a transfer award I got another furlough letter 6 months later. I was NOT about to move to NY! So, I accepted the sucky commute, because the alternatives (moving to NY or quitting) were even worse!

I really felt bad for some of my classmates, who DID move to NY. Some of them signed 1 year leases, and were furloughed after 6 months. I don't know what they did, if they stuck around and found other work in NYC to live out their leases, possibly staying for a while longer, or if they found a way out of their leases and were able to go back home.

If you 're not sure about moving to Atlanta from the other side of the country, I would say to you DONT MOVE TO ATLANTA, or at least south Atlanta.

Reasons:
#1 April 2007; Day before training starts, my car gets stolen from the hotel parking lot across from DAL world headquarters. I had just moved from Daytona, and didnt really have time to unpack, so along with the car, approximately all of 40% of what I owned was stolen as well, save the logbook, laptop and the clothes I had on me. I filed a police report and asked the officer what the chances are of recovering my car were; he responded by telling me his first advice was to go to autotrader.com. I then get a call 2 months later saying that my car was located in a wrecker lot, and it had been towed from a bad area of downtown only 3 days after it was reported stolen. It still had my liscense plate and everything except all the belongings were gone. Great job towing company on taking there sweet arse time to let me know my car was recovered. And they still wanted an $80 fee just to look at the car!

#2 April 2007; our NH class was quartered at the Westin equipped with a 24 hour guard on a gated parking lot that we had to pay to park there during training; Seems nice and secure but not so, one of my buddies had about $200 worth of stuff taken from his truck.

#3 December 2007;An intern living at our crashpad also has his truck stolen from a parking right next door to Flight Safety

#4 May 2007; Two interns walking out of their apartment in East Point are robbed at gunpoint


So much for "Southern Hospitality"
These are the primary reasons I am much more comfortable with the 2300 mile commute from SFO.

Wow!!! So pretty much stay away from Atlanta city. Which means if I move far enough away to be safe then after factoring gas, traffic, robbery expenses, etc. It might be faster and perhaps safer to commute.:)

I have a two leg commute, and I got through SLC all the time to get to CVG. I've been doing it for almost a year now (on reserve). My QOL will be a little better once I get a line (hopefully soon). It sucks big time, but I guess any commute is worth it if you don't want to live in base. I only have 5 daily non-stop flights between SLC/CVG and it can be difficult at times, but I've figured out which days/times are the best to commute and try and schedule my days off around that time. You shouldn't have a problem commuting to ATL, since there are so many non-stop flights. Congrats on the job!

Only if you make the mistake of living around the airport.
 
The area surrounding ATL is relatively nice. I know people who have been shot, robbed, and stabbed in Phoenix, Mesa, and Glendale....and thus I won't live in those cities, but it doesn't mean the whole metro area is bad....just like ATL.


Also when is comes to commuting, it is less than ideal but .............drumrole...............
IT 100% DEPENDS ON YOU.
Some people don't mind it and some people can't stand it at all.
 
Commuting isnt hard. In my 2+ years at my airline, I have only used my call-in-honest policy once. IT JUST SUCKS!! i hate it. Its better to work for a crappier airline where u live than to commute for a slightly better one.

jtrain, y dont you bid for LAX or ONT? even IAH or SAN would be easier, wouldnt it?
