CommutAir Direct Entry Captain

Are they doing involuntary upgrades yet?

No, but every CRJ CA that wants to go to the ER7 is being bypassed instead of allowed to transition when their seniority can hold it. Buddy of mine got his ER7 CA award last month and he figures he will be trapped on the CRJ through the summer at least.

*disapproving look*

No they haven't had to resort to desperate measures yet. In fact most crj bases can be held by 3 yrs nowadays, so maybe they are just OBRing to address the staffing crunch that invariably occurs every month in the junior bases.

Is there a dedicated ERJ upgrade short course now for current and typed pilots aka FOs? Saw something like that in the DVR.

They should be doing involuntary upgrades, the mechanism to do that is in the PPM. If you can’t fill the vacancies you fill them in inverse order.

Yes there is.

Why though? The problem isn’t so much a matter of qualified guys not wanting to upgrade but insufficient slack in the current pilot pool to let qualified people swap planes and not enough training capacity to keep up with demand. Filling vacancies is currently a lesser problem than not being able to afford to take currently flying people offline. Adequately staffed and all that...

So with Trans States shutting down due to high costs, I would be wary of coming to CommutAir now. We are about the same size as them and operate the same type- I could see us being next on the chopping block.

Chopping block or that all too rumored merger with XJT?

I should throw my experience in here. I was at 9K before my current job. I came into a company that was doing quick upgrades to anyone who qualified. I was thinking I'd get about 100 hours in the jet and upgrade. During my new hire time, they put a company policy in place that anyone without prior turbine experience, you had to have 300 with the company prior to upgrade. I got my 300 hours but missed the last upgrade class I could hold by about a month. Upgrades slowed for a while. I ended up with about 1,200 in the right seat before upgrade. In hindsight, I'm a better pilot and captain for it.

Even if they're offering it, I'd suggest getting a couple hundred hours in the right seat of a jet before upgrade if you can.

What happened to getting your 1000 TPIC as quickly as possible? Sounds like everyone is against DEC.

I'm not sure if people are against DEC in general. But as has been pointed out, CommutAir technically doesn't hire DECs, we just give out upgrades in initial training if available; so there's no guarantee of being a captain right away. Moreover trying to go right to being a jet captain after only flying pistons is a big step and may have a higher chance of failing and ending up with an indelible mark of Cain on your record. Also having 1,000 TPIC doesn't guarantee anything even if it gives you an advantage- there are plenty of people with many thousands of hours of TPIC who are still stuck at the regionals.

Commute air doesnt have a DEC position, so what are you getting at? CommuteAir is just saying theyre hiring you as a DEC and they clearly arent. GoJet did the same thing years ago.

You must, unfortuately, rememeber these managers know what youre looking for and are hoping a little lie will get you onboard.

It isn't that people are against DECs. It is how the different companies handle DECs and what life is like on reserve. QOL can really suck as a DEC for an extended amount of time. Especially if you don't have growth or a good career advancement program in place to help you move up the list quicker.

Besides what everyone else has said about QOL and seat security, I just know from my own experience going to the regionals after 3 years as a captain at Cape Air that flying a piston twin was not enough preparation to hop straight into the left seat of a turbine 121 operation. I’d want at least a couple hundred hours on the line as an FO before moving over. You’re just begging for a violation otherwise imo.

I don't disagree. I've just heard a lot of people say TPIC above all. Now it sounds like there are more considerations.
