Colgan Ops Bulletin

And if Colgan wants you guys doing this stuff on the taxi out, I might drop a dime on the FAA for that one. I figure they'd rather have you guys looking outside the flight deck while taxiing instead of running tests.....

Any AD compliance issues that need to be raised? :o

First of all, the safety checks are being complied with, it is exactly how Mesaba does it.

Second of all, they have not taken the pay credit away yet. I know that it is probably in the future, but at least for now we still have a runup credit in the morning.

Thirdly, they have not taken away our MX Cancellation pay yet. Again I know that this to, is likely in the future... but I would prefer to not get to excited until these things actually happen. I don't run well on rumors, I need facts.

Or taxi reeeeeally reeeeeeally slow...

MX cancellation pay ends Apr 15th per the memo for all fleet types.

Now that I read that again, I reaffirm my stance.

By taking away things like mx cancellation pay at an outfit where most are just scratching to get by financially, wouldn't you agree that this encourages a 'make it go' mentality?

It's essentially a hedge to make captains reluctant to exercise PIC authority regarding the legality of the flight, correct? The laws regarding maintenance and aircraft function are 'written in blood'- that means somebody died, and the FAA (or its predecessor) decided that in the interest of safety, specific rules should exist.

It's designed to undercut the payrolls, agreed, but the ultimate impact is that it increases the possibility of someone choosing the less safe option because the company is holding their bread and butter hostage.

It is, at the very least, one of those 'slippery slope' issues.

Thats exactly what I meant. They will use our pay as leverage to make sure the flight goes. I wouldn't even know how that's legal. It's sort of like withholding pay from a whistleblower.

Damn I feel bad for you guys. Seriously I do. Whenever we park next to you 1900 drivers, I'm bringing you snacks, sodas and water. You Saab guys have your own...sorry! :p

Ya know, I almost wish they'd do that here. Taxi out and do the fire test. Oh darn, R FIRE FAIL? Guess we have to do a gate return now and call out MX. Keep in mind we're in DTW, and it'll take about another half hour just to GET another gate. Factor another 30 minutes for MX to get there, 10 to defer the loop (they sure as hell won't fix it.....unless the other loop is already deferred), and you've got an extra 1:10 of pay right there.

Uh, yeah. That's 'pilot pushing'. It's a negative incentive designed to make pilots less likely to use their authority to ensure the maximum level of safety of the flight- which is ultimately their responsibility. It's lose/lose for the pilots.

Do you really think after a rash of gate returns, delayed or canceled flights that management will simply turn around and go "okay.. so.. that's not working.. we obviously made a mistake in policy.... "?

Dude.. I don't really see how the fact that the girth of your airplane leaves room for a stocked galley applies to this thread.

In fact, I really don't see how mention of your 'girth' applies here at all.

Before you came to colgan, they had this "CALL IT" exactly as it is incenetive, aka, if you lie about times you will be termintated with extreem prejudice. Everybody called honest times. The next day it was back to "call it as you see fit"

The next time you loose pay credit, you need to make 2 phone calls. The first to Our POI, the next to your local FSDO. Explaining that you have a broken airplane, but feel the company is threatening to withhold pay if you write it up, knowing that the flight will cancel. In light of the SWA, AMR DAL etc. MX issues, they will start hanging aournd more... which is what colgan doesn't want.

People who know me, know that i won't fly broken crap. Period. I've got a reputation for MXing planes. MX control has added a 4 letter word to my name (right in the middle), and they are convinced that i have a Woman in ALB. This isn't going to change that 1 bit. I'll just have to look harder at outstations so we get ferry pay rather than revenue pay. One way or another, flight time is flight time.

Sound advice man, but you're preaching to the choir with me- I straight up quit that join over six months ago.

Can't say I miss it, either.

sorry man, u just got stuck with the first part of the quote. I would have walked, but am burried to deep now.

If the rest of the industry wasn't looking so terribly shakey right now, i'd jet as well. But, then again, there is no way you would find me taking an FO position in anything that pays me less than 30% more than i am making now.

I know MX SUCKS at colgan right now, but they would rather just clean the cannon plugs then fix the problems. If it don't work, don't take it. I've refused flights for mechanical conditoins, and have yet to see a pink slip. Just fly at 2,000ft/lbs the next day.. to save "GAS" You would be supprised how much less fatigued you are when flying a quiet airplane all day

Company put out a new Ops Bulletin advising flight crews that run-ups/first flight of the day checks are being eliminated.

They are getting DRASTIC with cost cutting measures now. They say it's to save money with engine starts and fuel, but come on.

Cutting :15 minutes of pay credit from the morning crews.

Within the past two months they have taken:

MX CANCELLATION PAY
RUNUP PAY
CHANGED HOT RESERVE QUALIFICATIONS
BLOCK OR BETTER LANGUAGE

Whats next?

Be sure to thank the 50.5%.

??? Since when I did talk about "girth"? Like you don't know what its like flyin the Beech in the summer. I will gladly hand my buddies at Colgan bottles of water. Like your jungle jet doesn't have extra water to throw a 1900 crew.

Yeah. You know that's not what I'm saying. Come on, dude- everybody drinks the kool-aid at their latest gig. You're not foolin' anybody but yourself.

The way they padded the in/out times on the schedule when I was there, as long as nothing went wrong you ran early anyhow. You're right though- the lower noise level definitely makes for alot less fatigue.

What memo? I think i know the one you are talking about and it doesn't say it will end. Is there another one you are talking about? I haven't seen it.

Wick- In crew.colganair.com under "Archived Messages" there is a memo dated Feb 29, 2008 from Buddy Casey.

It reads...and I quote- "We will continue to compensate those of you affected my matintainence cancellations through the period ending April 15th, 2008.

Now we will see what happens when we have Mx Cancellation next month Wick.
