Colgan 18 hour days ???

Nice title block. Get educated on the issues my friend. EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT Comes off strong and I apologize. Pay it forward, I must remember! Ok, they can't strike because of the RLA, aka the Railway Labor Act, which organized pilots fall under. In a 30 sec nutshell, they cannot strike unless they have bargained in good faith with MGMT for an unspecified period of time and then are released after a cooling period. The short is they cannot strike at this time. However, the union is taking positive and assertive action to educate the crews on what is safe/legal etc. The beauty of being PIC is that we can refuse to what we think is unsafe. All areas are grey right now, but we are shedding light to our members based upon experience, NTSB findings, FAA rulings etc. I apologize for my earlier post. I don't want to edit it and pretend it wasn't there. I'm a man and react as such. I'm directly affected by these BS rules at Colgan and sometimes lose focus. You asked for an honest answer and deserve as much. It's my job here at colgan to remind all of us to remain professional even in the toughest at times, and it starts with me.

I edited it. It was a question I am not too familiar with labor and union laws especially in the Airline industry. I do however read phrases like "90% Strike authorization approved" I do not know what it means but Thanks.

no harm, no foul my friend. this is probably the only spot on the interwebs that we can discuss aviation in a neutral forum, all thanks to Doug. I appolgize for snapping. ask away my friend. This is the most open place I've found to discuss and learn about these issues.

I don't think we have an overnight scheduled beyond 9 hours to begin with...

They will take it to min rest unless there is reason beyond. I have had my rest period extended to 10 hours from hotel check in before, just by talking to the Duty officer, and quoting sections of our manual over the phone.

Once again, it's knowing the book and how to use it. Any CA out there should call in if the shuttle takes an hour. get your times pushed, you will not get in trouble. esp now

When they merge our SOCs, I want your guys. I get the runaround EVERY TIME I call.....

And I normally have to deal with a panicky FA going "We're gonna be late! We're gonna be late!" Even when I tell her "If they call you, tell them to call me and I'll take care of it" it's normally still a fight to calm them down. Company has everyone so scared they're gonna get fired over being 3 minutes late. What they fail to tell people is our DOT status are based on ARRIVALS, not departures. Departures within zero really only count towards management bonuses....

I would say you want some of them. It depends who you get, it also seems to be that they "know" you.

When I call with an issue, they know I have no issue going up the chain of command, so they don't press it most times.

For what it was worth, our old CP, would go to bat for crew members if they needed it. He was much more of the glue holding this place together than many people realized. I don't think many knew how much he sheltered the pilot group from untill he passed.

I loved calling him when CS was being absurd... then getting a call of apology from CS after he yelled at them.

Interesting! I was not aware of that. Where's my bonus?

I love getting calls asking why we pushed 1 minute late. Hmmm, we wouldn't have been late if the ramp crew got the damn jetway off the plane when the paperwork goes out the door.

Arrival + 14 is "on time" according to whomever tracks that stuff. BTS I think.

Yeah, I knew there was the 0min, +5min, +14min arrival stuff. Just thought the departure was the same. After all, we're harassed endlessly to depart on time, but never called about why we arrived late. Crazy stuff.....hearing that bonuses are tied to departures makes a ton of sense now. :(

We have a reporting system using ACARS to report delays accurately, as the gate agents always blame it on a crew delay. The company is pushing it hard. $$.

Yeah, I always send delay reports via ACARS, but I also keep a record in my APDL notes section. Even though I send it via ACARS, I still get called sometimes.

"Why didn't you let them pull the jetbridge?"
"The APU was deferred, and the ground power was hooked up. That jetbridge won't move with the power on."
"Uh....I don't get it? Why couldn't they just turn the power off?"
"Because it would have gone dark on the airplane, we wouldn't have power to the ignition thus making it impossible to start the engine with a deferred APU."
"Uh....what?"

Actual conversation I had with the assistant base manager after a delay.

The interpretation is clear that
Part 91 flying is not subject to 121 Duty Time Rules. Part 91 is not subject to 8 hrs or 16 hour duty day. [/FONT]

Let's revisit this for a second. Is Colgan simply not understanding that 16hr duty days are based on rest requirements, or are they actually claiming that time spent ferrying an airplane is rest?

Please, someone forward this to ALPA legal or the FAA or someone. It's the craziest BS I've ever heard.

The DOT tracks and publishes D+0 and A+14 as well as lost luggage claims and complaints per 1,000 passengers.

Right, but the stats published determining "on time" percentage are based on A+14. Our former NWA contract work is based off completion factor, so if they plane goes 4 hours late, it still counts. The Delta stuff in ATL has that plus A+14 factors in the contract. They don't even give us the A+14 numbers for the -200 side on our little daily update sheets (which MAY come out every 2-3 days).

The main thing dealing with D0 in our contracts is if a certain percentage of flights DON'T go D0, then there's no bonus payment for that period from the mainline partner. At least, that's my understanding from the negotiation guys I've talked to. They pretty much know our service agreements inside and out.

We may have a new union, but do you really not think that as soon as the memo came out, our MEC and legal was all over it? We arent stupid.
