CL300 Headset

Is the CL300 quiet enough up front to get away with a headset like the Telex 750, or would something with ANR be better, i.e. the Telex 850?

If it's anything like the 601/4/5 (which, by looking at it, I'd say it is), passive noise cancelling is more than enough. I often remove my headset when above FL300 and don't even have to raise my voice. I could probably get away with talking a little louder than normal down lower, but some people I fly with feel it necessary to descend through the teens at 350 knots.

I use the Telex 850 in the CRJ and like it a lot, I'm guessing it would be just as good in a Challenger!?

Flying it like he stole it, right on Mikey.

Not him. It'd be a pleasure to fly it with him.

The Challenger doesn't want to slow down down low. The big 85% bypass fans have lots of excess thrust. Some of the more "experienced" people I fly with don't seem to understand that the faster you go forward, the faster you have to descend to make a crossing restriction. It then gets loud, the deck angle gets a little ridiculous, and the crutches...I mean spoilers...come out.

Fly a profile (250/280/.70/.78/300/250) and it'll be comfortable, quiet, and much more fuel efficient.

Spoilers are a flight control like any other. The only downside to using them is a possible passenger comfort issue. I'm not convinced it is more fuel efficient either way, it depends. I roll my eyes whenever I hear someone refer to spoiler/speed break as a "crutch".

Using spoilers equates to wasting fuel, that's why people sometimes denigrate their use.

Edit to add; you edited your post. They waste fuel because you have used them to slow down, when the more efficient method would have been to pull the throttles to idle earlier.

Not necessarily. What if you had a 90 knot tailwind that changes to neutral or even a headwind as you get lower? By waiting to descend even if it necessitates the use of an air brake you may very well use less fuel than a low deck angle descent started much earlier.

To get back on topic...the 300 is pretty quiet up front, but not as quiet as a GIV, if that's any comparison. Below 300 knots its nice; above, and it can get a bit loud. An 850 would certainly do the job. We usually fly with Bose's and they are great, albeit possibly a bit overkill. I've forgot to turn on the ANR after a quick turn and flown a few legs without realizing.
