Chatting with Travolta

I also ran into JT at the Signature in MIA a few years back. I was waiting by the door to be buzzed out and in walks a man in shag clothes holding the hand of a handicapted kid. He walked up and it dawned on me, hey its Vince (Pulp Fiction joke). His G2 was parked side by side with the G3 I was flying, so we chatted a bit just on flying and Gulfstream stuff. Very down to earth guy. Side note* if you ever see the Breitling magazine ad with a G3 in the background and JT up front showcasing the watch that was one of our G3's... his 2 was in the shop.

It would have taken great effort not to say, "Aye....Mista Kottah!" on teh radio.

Does he say his callsign with "jay tee" instead of "juliet tango?"

I heard a gulfstream 1JT out of AFW a few months back.

I'm pretty sure he has instrument too? And he holds a SIC type rating in the 747.

Nope... his SIC is in the 707 (and a fine, fine airplane it is! :) ), not the 747. He does have his instrument rating, though, as well as types in the Lear, CE-500, and a "P/G-1159".

Ahh guess i got it mixed up.

Didnt Qantas pay for him to get his SIC in the 747 after he painted his 707 in the colors? I thought they did something like that...

You stalker! :p

I wonder why he didn't apply for an ATP when he received the type ratings?

I also remember an advertisment that ran a couple of years ago featuring Travolta in the aviation magazines. It said, "Profession: Pilot, Career: Actor".

How can you call your profession a pilot when you can't get paid to fly? That advertisement always bothered me somewhat.

I blame it more on the advertisers than Travolta though. He seems like a pretty cool guy.

Been discussed before but....

A) Why get his ATP? Unless he plans to be an airline pilot (which would be one heck of a pay cut), it's a waste of time and money.

2) As for the whole "professional pilot" thing, check out this thread.

The type ride is essentially an ATP ride. Where is the waste?

I agree with you in the adjective use of "professional"....but not in the noun sense of "profession."

The advertisement does not say, "professional pilot"...it states that it is his profession.

Nice share Calcapt. Chatted with him about 5 months ago at MYGF for about 10 minutes. Super down to earth guy, and a huge aviation enthusiest. Unless you recognized him as the rug cuttin' machine he is - you would think he's just a regular Joe that loves flying.

I'd assume the problem would be that he doesn't have a commercial certificate...a prerequisite to having an ATP. So that would make an additional hoop for him to jump through that I'm sure he doesn't see as worth it as a weekend warrior.

Another problem would be having to take the ATP written test. I managed to get it done in a day, but found it to be the most intensive, outdated and most disconnected-from-reality of all the written tests.

Some of these comments solidify my irritation with the company that put Travolta in that advertisement. He doesn't have the time, inclination, motivation, etc to complete a written exam or earn a commercial certificate...yet they claim it's his profession.

I don't get it.
