Charts!! (suck!)

Totally agree with you Blackhawk. There is an FAA interpretation out for current charts and it says pretty much what you said. They won't violate you for expired charts alone, but if something happens and a current chart could have prevented it, consider it a target painted on your certificate.

For those of you who have the ipad... What size and 3G or just Wifi? I've seen an external GPS (called Bad Elf) that Foreflight recommends to add even if you have the 3G (with the gps built in). So, since the 3G coverage isn't good at all where I live, I think I would get the Wifi only and the Bad Elf GPS.
 
The 3G is only required on the ground for initial GPS fix and data downloads (radar, fuel price etc.). However you will find that you catch quite a lot of signal while flying (full bars overs New Mexico mountains) wich is great to update weather, fuel prices and so on. I would recommend purchasing the RAM mount. Holding the iPad on the knee is just not the best as it catches a lot of glare.

I've been using that iFly 700 lately - $500 Aviation GPS, Geo-referenced sectionals, en route charts, etc. It has every app plate and airport diagram (those are not geo-referenced yet). It's been pretty good.

@rwbg1984 - why don't you get foreflight/iPad to start doing international charts (en routes, etc)... that would be nice, especially if you had to say all of the sudden file somewhere a couple miles outside Cuba's airspace and forgot the specific paper en routes for that area. ;)
 
If you buy the 3g Ipad do you have to buy the 29.99 service or does just having the gps receiver built what matters. If you have to buy the data service that they sell with it the monthly cost would make it much more expensive.

Also if I have foreflight can I use it on both my Iphone and Ipad or would I need two licenses for that?
 
Have you thought about using CG charts? I know you are worried about being current and all, but a CG would cover a vast area...
 
I went the iPad/ ForeFlight route!

Got a Refurb 16GB Wifi (thanks to Codyjp's link). Going to hit the Bad Elf site now and get the GPS (thanks to Erik1010's link).

Agreed to give my laptop to the wife to appease THAT side of the house (as long as I still get to use it to print various things and what not) since she wanted a new one anyway and mine's only 3 months old.

chartdude.com has a nice set of really cheap charts... check em out I guess??

I got VFR charts from florida to california with all the TACs and any sort of thing I might need (suck as Denver, Memphis, Charlotte, San Franscisco, etc) that I ended up not using and all that was I think 80 or 85 dollars. I believe it was 12 sectionals 4 or 5 tacs, and the grand canyon chart

I don't remember the exact numbers but it's less than 5 bucks a chart.. I think if you had to get a triple set of each everytime you might still be up that high

You don't have to purchase 3G service, the only reason I bought 3G iPad is because of the gps receiver. Fortunately I have wifi everywhere in my area.
 
I can't tell you how many charts I've bought in the past year and literally never once opened because they expired before I got the chance to actually go up and use them. Too bad I don't have a fireplace.

Good call, there is a second option to for GPS receivers. I think it is on the FF website. Regardless, that is only an option too, if you think about it, your stack of paper charts don't come with a GPS either. :)

Yep... I hate to think of all the money I've thrown in the trash with paper charts over the last 13 years. :banghead:
 
My birthday is in March and I'm going to forward this link to my wife. Please keep the comments coming on the advantages of the iPad.
 
I'm already planning on getting all of my books on it so I can stop lugging that huge flight bag to and from the airport and move everything else needed over to my headset bag.
