Changing from Flight Control to Airport Operations

How are things starting out for you so far?

Things are going great. I just completed week 2 of 6 of training. We get to respond to medical emergencies inside the airport and also when pilots declare emergencies have to divert to PHX. When airlines that are based at PHX such as Empire and Mesa need to send their aircraft around the airport for maintentance to get to the hangers, we get to escort them and communicate with ATC to cross active runways and taxiways. I found the most fun when we got to do runway inspections. We opened up the truck and zoomed down the runways. At one point, we raced US Airways down the opposite runway, but in the end, they smoked us. These are just to name a few.

Very cool. Do you receive any medical training? It might come in handy to know how to use the defibrillator one day.

When I was in the military, the base I was at had the pop-up aircraft arresting system. Well we had a bozo that didnt tell ATC (it was very late at night and flying was done) he was out on that end of the runway, so the tower never deactivated the system. Yep, he drove over it and it popped and threw him and the vehicle about 60ft off to the side.

It was funny!!!

We don't need any training. When an emergency call is made, dispatch makes the call to rescue first. They respond to the emergency within 3 minutes, the next call is made to us and PD. So we're right behind fire and rescue. But I got CPR and defibrillator certified at my last job and I'm glad I did because we never know when someone will drop in front of our eyes.

Its the airport.
