CFIs Needed

Are those rooms furnished or do you have to come up with your own stuff? I plan on dropping my resume' in two weeks and I really hope it works out. Beer-pong anybody?

Yeah I think this sounds like a really cool deal. May as well apply while I'm still single and young. 10 months doesn't seem to bad. Just curious...what the girl to guy ratio? Hopefully its easy to get out of the dorms and meet the opposite sex sometimes. Thats what made college great and its why I'm affraid to leave. But yeah, I should definetly send my resume in. 10 month contract doesn't seem too bad.

The staff is exclusively male, with only one exception that I know of. Been to a few bars in Atwater, Turlock and Merced, and was sorely disappointed. The Bay Area is probably the best bet for meeting new folks.

also, do they have cable tv and wireless internet?

Not in the dorms.

They have 3 TVs with DirectTV in the rec center. Internet used to be available in the rec center, but hasn't seemed to work for a while. I think many (if not most) instructors are getting internet through a local wireless broadband service (Clearwire), and using routers to split the connection and cost.

Hate to break the bad news to you, but you'll never again have the same access to the opposite sex that you do living in a college dorm.

We sort of have wireless internet in the dorms, but not enough access points to serve everybody, and since all of the students are on the internet playing video games all day and all night when THEY SHOULD BE STUDYING [/rant] it gets so bogged down you can't even get on. At 0700 however, when all of the students finally go to bed, it is the fastest and most reliable internet connection you'll ever find. But then by 0900 when they are in groundschool, they'll again hook up to the net and play their games and pretend to be taking notes on their laptops.

Dorm rooms have two closets, two entertainment center/dressers, two night stands, one desk, two chairs, two lamps, and one twin bed, though you can get a second if you want depending on availability. Some instructors have wives/girlfrineds that visit so they take the two twin beds and make them into one king. Of course, you can bring anything you want also.

Rented from Sacramento and drove. It's two hours.

Another guy took a train from the Bay area and then a bus once closer. If you're interested in that option I'm sure he could post some information.

I did the train thing. I flew in to Oakland, then took Amtrak to Merced (about a 3 hour train ride), then took a cab.

Another option is to fly into Fresno or Modesto, but the tickets are usually more expensive to those airports.

Hi everyone,
I am coming for the interviews on the 4th-5th. More people keep posting about the dorm food- either more people are getting hired or it must be a touchy subject... Can't wait to meet some of you and check this place out- sounds like a really great opportunity and fun (other than the food?) environment. Will we have our own rooms when we stay Thurs night? Also, are we supposed to bring a sleeping bag? I don't have one up here, but could maybe try to round one up. Do we eat in the cafeteria?

How would you guys describe the main focus of the interview? Any ideas for what to focus on this week in preparation (besides what's been posted already)? Thanks.

I just came back from the interview last thur/fri, dorm food was chinese type food every meal, mystery meat. you get a room with a bathroom and a twin bed as long as your stay may be. the main focus of the interview was that whats going on there is a huge collaborative effort on all the cfis part. they are looking for team players. All the cfis there were close knit and very dedicated. I saw no red flags there, great operation. Thurs morn you take a long-ass test on every subject, id say just review everything. Then you do a HR/tech interview w/ the chief and asst cheif, they ask you questions on sectionals enroute and approach charts, as well as systems and aerodynamics. On Friday you go on a flight, I did short TO/LNDG, slw flight, stalls, steep turns. Have fun and good luck.

It'd be a tasty subject, not touchy. (ha-ha)

Seriously: the food is free. If there's a bizarre meal once or twice per week I can deal with that. I don't know of many places that offer 21 free meals a week to their CFIs, and it's still a great deal even if you just come in once in a while and grab a bowl of rice and a soda.

Yes.

If it's the same arrangement as it was in February, you should bring a sheet, blanket, and pillow, or a sleeping bag could be put on the mattress.

Yes.

The written test is cumulative and comprehensive. The interview was various questions about anything to do with being a flight instructor. I don't have any extra advice to offer besides what has already been posted here.

You will be busy at this job; I logged 80.0 hours of pay in the last two weeks of April and flew 90 hours during the entire month of April. Great group of instructors.

I was out for the interview on 4/27-28. I will be joining you guys some time in June. The test was long, not difficult. The first 50 were essay but not too bad. The multiple choice was weird. It wasn't hard but the questions were the "neat to know" type instead of the important questions. Looks like I'll be doing a ground school in the morning and 2 students in the afternoon. I thought the facilities were pretty cool, and will be great when they're done. It was nice meeting you guys while I was out there! Just so y'all know.....the food was really good while I was there.....I didn't realize it was tofu until somebody pointed it out. I'm really low time so I'm excited for the opportunity. I hope the other guys I interviewed with will be there too. Thanks Matt for the tour of the area!
