Getting ready to start on my CFI, CFII and (I hope) MEI. Curious what you guys think about the advantages and disadvantages of doing the II as the initial.
Any thoughts?
Any thoughts?
My thoughts:
Initial CFI-SE is a huge topic with the potential of a 6 hour oral.
CFII is a huge topic with the potential of a 6 hour oral.
I wouldn't want to combine the two into one super death-star checkride, but maybe that's just me.
I guess I am not quite sure of the question. Are you saying you want get just a CFII? Without looking at the regs, don't you need a category and class rating before you add an instrument rating?
Maybe I am misunderstanding.

So my question is what would be the advantage / disadvantage to doing the CFII checkride first (as my initial instructor rating with the FSDO), then doing CFI-A and MEI with a DPE...afterwards.
No, this very common.
With just a CFII, I assume you could just do instrument training. And it could be used in any aircraft of the same category on your commercial certificate?
Am I the only one who when to the FSDO for all three instructor exams? :banghead:

We do the CFII first, because it is easier to get a 2007 G1000 172 through the FSDO maintenance inspection than a late 60's/ early 70's model Arrow.
I did my CFII as initial with the local FSDO in a 172 G1000 with about 250hrs on it, it failed FSDO maintenance inspection, switched to a 172 G1000 with 50hrs on it also failed inspection.
