CFI

I'd always tell my students that when we've got the aircraft at 1400, we're scheduled to be pulling chocks at 1400, not hanging out in the snack room or pulling in late from Quiznos.

i know it takes a lot of work to become CFI

and doing the preflight prior to starting the lesson is such a good idea since i always go 30 mins before my lessons...i never thought of doing that!! usually, i use that 30 mins to talk with my girlfriend

I'm hopefully a matter of months from having my CFI, but I have the same problem with my riding students. When I schedule a 4pm lesson on Sunday, I want my student to have her horse saddled and be ready to work when I show up. There is no such thing as charging for ground with riding instruction. It's all too common to have a student show up at their lesson time, still have to saddle, warm up, and they want to talk about this that and the other for 30 minutes after you finish. Once you add all that time in, what I charge for a lesson isn't very much at all.

Actually, I've had the reverse be true in the past. I've had an isntructor and an plane scheduled for 1700 and I would show up at 16:30, go pre-flight and be ready to go.... and then sit and wait until 17:20+ while the instructor finishes up with another student....or is just pulling up to the FBO.

My current instructor is an exception. He's on early/on time every time.

I assume you inform your students about this 'policy'. If I was one of your students, I'd book the plane for 1 1/2 hours and you for the 1 hr to get you in the right seat for the time I need you. That way, you could overlap a bit and you could jump out of one plane and into another and therefore avoid the 'hi and bye' time.

...of course I do. And as far as your 'overlap' scheme, my only hope is that when you become a CFI someday that you have four students in a row who do that to you consecutively.

In 14 months of being a CFI, I have NEVER had anyone suggest I was overbilling my time. I HAVE had people correct me on more than one occasion when I said, "ahh.. we BS-ed for a while, that'll only be 1 hour of ground." and they reply with, "no, I have been with you for two hours, so its two hours."
