There is nothing wrong with trying to increase the market rate. Maybe you look at everything from just a business prospective and not a labor prospective.
There is right and wrong ways to go about it though. Saying that your entitled to a raise isnt the right way. And you have to be realstic about your situation. You have to ask what do I bring to the table that the guy waiting to replace me doesn't? If the answer is nothing than your probally not getting a raise. Now if the turnover rate is really high where you work than maybe the employer will consider raising the rates to keep turnover down. But if turnover is low and he has a ton of applications on his desk he is going to see no reason to raise the wages.
