Hey guys,

I have a quick question. Can you do your CFI training in a fixed gear or does it have to be a retractable?

Thanks for the reply!

The initial checkride has to be in a complex, but I don't recall anything saying what the training has to be done in. Though it would be kind of silly to practice for the ride in a different plane than you were taking the ride in.

Only the landings & emergency procedures have to be in a complex, however as said above it may me more of a headache then just doing it all in the complex.

Get it straight from the front of the CFI PTS, and teach your students to read all of the PTS, including the front part that explains all about the checkride. Be a CFI.

We did the first 10 hours in fixed gear 172, probably to save the landing gear from the swap to right seat side loading experiences. The next 5-10 and prep for ride was in the arrow.

i also did most of my training in fixed gear. I spent about 3 hours in a Cardinal to get used to it before the checkride.

I know this isn't a direct answer to your question, but if you didn't want to train in a retractable single, you could do this:

First get your Multi-engine Instructor as your Initial CFI certificate, in say, an Apache?
Then, you could train in a single engine fixed gear to add-on SEL privileges to your CFI certificate. You don't need to use a complex single because you will have already demonstrated complex stuff on the MEI checkride.

But I don't know how you can use that yellow plane in your avatar that's leaking;) some kind of fluid, unless you can add a second seat for the examiner.:laff:

Two solutions for that:

1. Get too low for a second, and dang "which gear are you talking 'bout?"
2. I think they make little trailers with wings for the DPE/Inspectors.

Gotta tell em it's a calibrated leak and will stop after pushing a certain button or it simply runs out of hot sauce.
Edit: It can't be hot sauce, because it's not red. It must be vinegar! I think he's sprinkling fries in this picture! Yeah, that must be it!

:D

I did all my CFI training in an arrow, minus the spin training. When I got to the checkride the examiner made everyone do spins, so we went up in the cessna to do spins first and ended up doing most of my checkride in it, and only the performance takeoffs/landings in the arrow. That being said, a chandelle is a chandelle no matter what you're flying.
