CFI job in Alaska

And there are lots of opportunities for pilots. There are several people in my class that are going to be right seat in the caravan at 250 hrs. There are Saab and metro FOs who switched over at 750 hours. And we are expanding this year. Of course there's lots of bush companies as well...

When I lived in Vegas there was a CFI at a flight school there that got hired to fly Beech 1900s in AK. I do not believe he had Alaska time. Of course being in Vegas he had alot of mountain time

Yeah, but don't most of them want Alaska time already?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not necessarily. Most of the low time pilots in my class went to school in florida/arizona. Some of the higher time guys came from down south as well. Although some do have AK time requirements, many of them just want to see you living here or serious about moving up here.

I am in the groundschool class for PenAir. Tomorrow is the last day, so studying for the exam tonight. We supposedly find out our fate tomorrow - could be moving to the bush, or staying here in ANC. Era may be going away, they were purchased by a company that is considering selling the fixed wing division. So PenAir could be picking up their routes - all rumor at this point though...

So Tim, what did you get??

Hey CJ - I got the Saab FO spot! I am very excited. Saab school doesn't start till march 21st though. How is training going?

Hey Tbone
How did the guys with 250tt get the right seat caravan job? Did they already live in AK? I have 600tt all in mountainous areas but I haven't even applied yet as I thought I HAD to be currently living in AK? Any Advice?

I don't think any of 'em had ak time. One guy is from SoCal, a few others did all their training in FL. It is a misconception that you have to have AK time to get a job up here. It helps, but these guys are all going to be right seat in a caravan. They will be learning from some of the best pilots anywhere, flying into some of the most challenging airports in the world. Not bad for a first pilot gig. Wish someone had showed me what's up when I was a newbie. Some of the people who went this route were right seat in the SAAB 340 at 700 hours. If you really want the fasttrack to an aviation job, come to Alaska....

A great way to get in with them is to work the ramp, or some other capacity with the company. They really like to hire from within. Some of the low-timers did it for a few weeks before getting hired. One guys worked the ramp for only about 3 weeks, and his seniority number is higher than mine!

Is there anything more you can tell me (and everyone else) about PenAir? What is the pay like, where all do you fly, how long to upgrade?

Thanks

PenAir is unique in that we operate both 135 and 121 - we have some special expemptions (made ground school quite a chore!) The 135 operation is the "bush" charters to outlying villages and communities around the state. They fly cherokee 6's, caravans and navajos out there. Mainly based out of king salmon, dillingham and cold bay. You can make some really good money flying the bush ops (unless you are right seat in the caravan, which doesnt' pay squat.) Generally they work two weeks on, two off.

The 121 operations are Saab 340s and Metro IIIs and 23s. Your first year as an FO, you make about 26K, then goes up steadily from there. As captain, you can make significantly more. I dont' want to throw the pay scales out there on this forum but if you email me I can give you a little more info. 121 side is nice because you are based in ANC, and back in town every night. They fly to some pretty gnarly places, like dutch harbor, St. Paul island, and sand point. Some of these are gravel runways in some of the nastiest wx in the world. You know how crab fishing in the bering sea is the most dangerous job in the world? We are the airline that flies those guys to work. From what I have seen so far it is an awesome company, with great people. It started out as a bush operation in the 60s, and has a pretty interesting history involving some of the pioneers of avaition up here. There were a lot of interesting stories in ground school.

PenAir is a great place to be for a number of reasons. We are codeshare with Alaska airlines, and we are taking over routes that they don't want anymore. Era is a major competetor of ours, and they may be going away as they were bought out. So we could be expanding a lot this year. Upgrade times - tough to say, but probably about 5 years. Usually you fly right seat for a while, then go to the bush for a year or two to get pic time, then come back as captain. Kind of depends on how much exansion there is in the next few years.

Hope that helps, let me know if you want more info...

Anyone who is reading this and thinking about moving to AK, pm me...I will be going from Cincinnati to AK in the next few weeks. I need to split gas costs, and open to go out of my way to pick someone up. LET ME KNOW, THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR TO GO!!!!

Eric

How hard is it to get on with Penair?Do you have to live in ANC to get a job?And is there certain time that is competive? Also how long to upgrade to the left seat?

Why does it benefit you to fly in alaska if you want to fasttrack your aviation career?

Thanks

There are opportunities up here you just don't find as often in the lower 48. If you read some of my earlier posts you will see what I mean. For example, right seat of a caravan at 196 hours. There are lots of pilots needed in AK, therefore they hire with lower mins.
