I came across this on barnstormers.com:

CFI NEEDED- CASH & ALASKA TRIP • $1,000 • JOB OFFERED • I have a flying C182 but there's no CFI here. I'll fly you to Alaska and pay $1K cash to train me. • Contact Layne Parker - PARKER WEB SERVICES LLC located Gustavus, AK USA • Telephone: 907-209-0305 • Posted September 6, 2010

The link has the poster's email address. I hope this helps somebody out...

1000 dollars isnt alot if you have to stay up there the whole time while hes doing his training, pay for your own food and place to stay. I mean if he was going to do a accelerated course and be done in like two weeks thats one thing.

Look on a map where Gustavus is. $1000 bucks won't go very far in that part of the world. Also, I know you young CFI's are hungry out there, but be very-very careful if you come up here. The weather is nothing to shake a stick at, especially this time of year.
I'd negotiate a price to include accommodation if you really want to come up here.

$1000 Isn't really enough to get someone through an entire rating... Even though a free Alaska trip and some Alaska time would be kind of cool.

Probably that one that's white and urine yellow. I'd need more than $1000 to teach someone to fly in AK especially since the weather is about to get combative.

I doubt it's a quick over and done deal.

Oh yeah, in another month the weather there will be exciting and simultaneously uncomfortable. The winner is actually my favorite time to fly there though.

Doing some math here... Lets say you charged $40 an hour, which is the low end of the going rate here in AK. Lets say you had a pretty good, motivated student who finished in 50 hours, less than average. You would be looking at $2000, just for your time, not to mention with this type of deal you would normally be looking at some sort of compensation for housing and expenses. Sounds like a stellar deal...:rotfl:

This is a horrible deal.

Put in 55 hours of flight -
35 hours of ground, that is about 11 dollars per hour.
Then question how long this is going to be dragged out and factor in food and housing.
= bad idea.

Plus, AK is the land of milk and honey when it comes to pilots per capita, why can't he find an instructor?

There are lots of pilots there but very few who are active instructors. I know of only a handfull of people who are "instructors" in Juneau. Gustavus is beatiful but expensive so I'm not shocked he's having a difficult time finding someone to teach him.

Now that I'm not drowning in work at the hangar, I need to get myself a local checkout or something and start advertising CFI services.

Of course the long-term thing to do would be buy a 150 and renovate it through a winter, then open Juneau Flight Training.

I talked to this guy and he tried to low ball me, I told him Id guarentee him 20hrs of dual if he paid me half up front, but he wanted to pay me the thousand after he passed his checkride, and do a BFR for his dad on top of that, included in the price. HA! Not happening, Im already in Juneau and have experience here and hes still trying to low ball, good luck with this guy if anybody takes it.
