CFI/II renewal

I just finished up with an on-line renewal. I have used both groups, Gleim and American Flyers and wonder what the opinions of the two are. After using both, I know which one I will use again in 2 yrs.

I'll be doing American Flyers again (since it's a "pay one time" deal) this year. Probably starting in late July or early August to make my September expiration.

It sucks because it takes forever, but it's great because you only pay once.

Mine is due in February and I think I am just going to do the American Fliers one because of the cost savings.

IMO, cost is the only advantage of the American Flyers program. I prefer the Gleim, but I'll continue to ues American Flyers since its a one time pay program.

Am I reading this right..... You oay once of rht eprogram, and in 2 more years, you do it again for free?

I don't know. Did I read any of that right? :rotfl:

I'm just guessing at the first part, but yes. My next renewal (American Flyers FIRC) will be "free". I'll even take the trip to the FSDO for my temporary.

Do share... Mine is due in Feb.

American Flyers is the pricier for one time but it then is free for all future renewals. The Gleim is a clearer path with the info connecting directly to the questions.

I believe the purpose of training is to learn, not to mull through tons of verbage as though it is some rite of passage.

It seems from comments thus far, AF gets the vote on costs, not for format.

Agreed.

If I ever took a long time away from instructing and decided to get back into it, an FIRC wouldn't be my preferred method of "refreshing". I'd sit down with an instructor and make sure I knew what I was doing before hopping in a plane with a student. I typically recommend the same to my instructor applicants.

Yup, spell check wasn't used in that one, and my fingers got sloppy.

I'll second that.

I paid my $99 to AF back in '00, been doing it every 2 ever since...

Are you guys not signing too many students off? I went to the FSDO and did it for free in five minutes.

Same here, but I'll be interested to see if I can pull that off again in two years or if I'll have to go to American Flyers or Gleim. I've seen people use Gleim and I'm a fan but it's hard to go wrong with AF if you only have to pay once.

Im voting for AF. 95% of the content I know, but there is always that 5% that was something forgotten or is new. Even if i was signing off tons of students, I'd still take a refresher - but that's just me and the way i am.

You can't beat the price over time either.

The only issue I have with AF is the logged computer time. It doesnt take me 2 hours to read 10 pages. I understand why it is done, but it is something I wish could change.

Is it worth it for the ACR? August will be my first time (amazing how 2 years go by that quick too....)

I just finished mine using gleim and I was satisfied with the product. They even did the paperwork for me so that I didn't have to drive to a FSDO.

I went the Gleim route.

Easy structure, 20 T/F questions, a .pdf file that is similar to their books (outline format) covering the topics for that sub-unit, then a 10 question multiple choice knowledge quiz for each sub-unit.

It can be done in less than four hours, if you're in a rush.

It took me 17 days, but I took my time.

Now to fill out this 8710 and try to get into the FSDO on the 22nd.
