Hi,
There is a picture of level flight with nice headwind :-) You can see GND mode as well as track...C172 can fly backwards...:-))

I do remember something about it going automatically into GND, which will still reply to the beacon with a code, just not alt. Hence it was policy to manually go to alt, good primacy training. Automation is nice, but you still have to be PIC.
 
The SoCal controllers in the Los Angeles basin would have on air strokes if this happened with any regularity out here.
 
I've never seen the transponder go back to GND mode during slow flight. The AHRS, on the other hand, starts getting confused below 25 kts GS or so...
I did 25 knots groundspeed backwards according to the approach controller... the AHRS went absolutely apenuts.

Page 122, simply states:
"Altitude Mode is automatically selected when the aircraft becomes airborne. Altitude Mode may also be selected manually by pressing the ALT Softkey."

So, it depends on the aircraft, however

Page 5, states:
"As installed in most aircraft, these units transition to an ALT reporting mode at a ground speed of 30 Kt."

That is from Garmin to the FAA for DPE's, whose is down with the OPP (yeah you know me), in ATL, ATT. I think that is about as in depth as we can get before you call the Manufacturer of the aircraft as to what they set the definition of 'airborne' is, or what Garmin has customized to those specific aircraft. I do recall that it would go to GND in flight at times, and I forget when that happened and what our rule was. It's been years. However, that is why we always had the students manually set it for good situational awareness and aircraft transition. It wasn't an unsat item if they forgot it, but it got brought up. If ever in doubt, press ALT.
