HERNDON, Va. - A small plane headed to the Manassas Regional Airport from the Philadelphia area ran out of fuel and crashed into a Herndon apartment building early Friday.
"Good thing it didn't have any (fuel) when it crashed into the living room because we'd probably have a totally different scenario right now," says Capt. Willie F. Bailey with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
"It didn't hit into the bedroom area at all."
Three people -- two in the apartment and one in the Cessna 177B -- sustained minor injuries following the 12:30 a.m. crash at the Dulles Greene Apartments on Astoria Circle. The complex is near the Dulles Toll Road.
David Ventura, who lives in the apartment, tells NBC Washington that he was in shock when he discovered a plane in his living room. He says he walked into the room and asked the pilot if he was OK.
"It could have been a whole lot worse," says Bailey. "It's a blessing that no one got killed or any major injuries."
Nine adults, seven children and three pets had to be evacuated from the apartment building. The American Red Cross is assisting them.
Bailey says the crash did not cause any major structural damage to the three-story building. The plane remains lodged in the building.

"Witnesses say the plane's landing gear was down. They describe the sound of the crash as being similar to a car crash or thunder during a storm."

I hope his gear was down. Hard to put the gear up in a 177, but I guess it is possible if you try hard enough. As far as what it sounds like, ugh, Imma stop while I'm still in a good mood.

Gees, what a nice airplane. Sounds like everyone will be ok. I wonder why an aerial photography company would use such a nice airplane? I thought aerial photography was kinda like freight in terms of aircraft....

We have a couple of our users that flew photography for a company that had a very nice 206.

No wing struts on 177's. But then, I would probably take that a step further and use a 177RG if it was available. But the lack of wing struts goes a long way to making that a great photo platform.

Report in the Post said that the pilots "had an electrical problem and the engine was cutting out." (paraphrased.)

True, but why the nice paint job, why the sweet avionics and cockpit?
