Carlsbad / San Diego flight training - school or club?

Hello,

I have been using the search and found some useful topics on this subject, but none of them were very recent.

I am wondering what the best route to get my PPL would be. At face value it seems Grey Eagle would be the cheapest option, but is that really so, and is it worth it? Does Mel still own it? I had also looked at Pacific Coast Flyers club thinking it would be a cheaper route then going to an aviation school but that doesnt seem to be the case, espcially after club fees. Plus One Flyers seems like a popular club but they dont have many plans at Palomar it looks like.

Are there any hidden fees if I went through an aviation school? When I spoke to the guy at Pacific Coast Flyers he mentioned club fees and that I should get insurance. Is it typical to get additional insurance if I fly through a school or a club?

If anyone has any experience training in the Carlsbad area please tell me your story.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I ended up going with Grey Eagle, they were very affordable and my instructor Kam seems like a good guy. Maybe once I get m PPL I will join PCF?

If you ever end up closer to MYF, SEE, or SDM, I highly recommend joining Plus One Flyers (for flight training or time building).

i highly recommend PCF. I had many friends start at pinnacle and they raped them. Switched to PCF where they actually want you to pass. Go to accelerated flight school for everything else. Best decision I ever made if you are serious about flying.

Been with Plus One for almost a year as an instructor and have to say I have been pretty happy overall. Than again I had always taught at Flight Schools and this is the only flying club I have been part of. The only part I miss teaching in a club is the contacts are scarce compared to an established flight school. Just my .02c
