Rome, Oneida Co. (WSYR-TV) – A small plane heading from Syracuse lost its only engine and landed in a field a few hundred yards away from Delta Lake, in the northern outskirts of the City of Rome early Thursday morning.

The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says the pilot, a Brewerton man whose name was not immediately released, was operating a single-engine turbo prop plane, owned by FedEx. The plane had departed Syracuse’s Hancock Airport and was heading to Plattsburgh with cargo on board.

Around 7:45, the pilot reported the engine failed, leaving the aircraft with no power. At the time, the plane was about 15 miles from Griffiss Airport. Sheriff’s Deputies say while on approach to land, the aircraft was rapidly losing altitude and air speed.

Investigators say when the plane dropped below the clouds, which were about 1,000 feet up, the pilot made the decision to either crash land in Delta Lake or a less populated area west of the lake. Sheriff’s Deputies say the pilot was able to land in a large field adjacent to the intersections of Elmerhill and Chmelewski roads.

The pilot was not injured and was the aircraft was not damaged.

Looks like the Company is on the way out to help:

I hope they give him the rest of the month off through the holidays, with pay!

At minimum! He should get a nice bonus for saving the aircraft and the cargo!!

Great job by the pilot!!

Edit:
I know it is his job to ensure the safety of the flight, that includes the aircraft and the cargo. No bonus should be expected or demanded to do such. However, in the new world of cost cutting and executive bonuses, I dont think it would be wrong to give a bonus to an employee for saving the company a large chunk of money.

but but but but the PT6 is bulletproof!!!

Nice job on ya there, son (whoever you are)! That'll put hair on yer chest.

I always love it when guys argue that the chances of a PT6 failing are statistically insignificant. I'd bet that pilot would disagree.

Yeah, good luck with that. The company may or may not say that you can.
I know for a fact the company I work for would support me 100% in the aftermath of an emergency situation such as this. Part of this support would include being able to take time off (with pay) as necessary until it would be safe to resume flight crew duties, had any stress or other issues arisen from the incident.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Can you say that about your company?

Yeah that's what I was thinking.. You don't have much time once you punch through the deck at 1000' to pick a field. Good job on his part. Now get back out there, take off outta that field, and move some boxes!
