I think of it as the most dangerous part of my duty day...
I agree. Taxiing is definitely the time on a flight where I have a heightened sense of awareness. Not only is it difficult navigating around some airports, but then throw in tug drivers, fuel trucks, buses, other airplanes, slick taxiways, low visibility, night, etc., and it gets challenging.
When I was an FO, I was always itching to fly, because then I could do something besides run checklists and talk on the radio. Now that I've upgraded, I'll usually split the legs and give more to the FO (especially new ones). Knowing that I need to get the airplane from the gate to the runway and vice versa is enough for me sometimes. I've had enough bad landings, I don't need many more.
Jumpseating on SWA yesterday, it was the FOs leg. Doing their landing calculations on the OPC, the situation required that the Captain do the landing. So they transfered controls, and the Captain told the FO he could have the next two legs since he had to take the landing on this one. I'd definitely do the same thing. After all, one landing and taxiing around, that's enough work!
