Canadair Crash at ASE / Aspen Eagle, Colorado

I heard only two approaches on the LiveATC recording, but this seems to indicate three approaches.

There are more than a few Captains at my company that won't even attempt the approach if they don't have the airport by Red Table. I've only done the approach and subsequent max gross V1 cut and s/e APG departure out of there a few times in the sim, and never in real life, but I can say that it is an airport that you had better have your ducks in a row, and bring your A-game every time.

Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Also wishing a speedy recovery to the survivors.

I will be interested to see the NTSB report.

For people that profess to be "pull themselves up by the bootstraps" and consider themselves "Job Creators", they do sound high maintenance.

I actually enjoy most of my pax but the truth is I spend tons of time coordinating trips, ordering catering, arranging rental cars, talking to FBO's, basically acting like a travel agent. Sometimes we fly too.

I'm not a corporate guy but the idea of a flight attendant walking an irate passenger to the cockpit and then taking a jumpseat in a high-stress environment confounds me.

One of the many reasons I'm in the 121 world now. Being threatened to be fired if we don't make it in just doesn't work with me.

To add some insight to those that don't operate in to Aspen on a regular basis, here is an excerpt from our GOM (91k/135 jet and turboprop operator). We only use the VOR/DME-C.

1An “Aspen Qualified PIC” is a PIC who has, within the last 12 Months, operated a Company

My old charter shop was actually pretty good about ASE when it came to us saying no. We had specific crew rules and WX requirements to get in there and were never pressured or questioned about saying no. That being said, even on the best of days one needs to be on their game and when it gets questionable don't be afraid to run up the white flag and divert.

I've, uh, heard, yeah, heard, about a Lear 60 doing a circling approach into there after the captain (and owner of the charter company) botched up the approach and landing so badly there really weren't any other options.
Maybe this is the same story, about a Lear 60 at Aspen....but about a year ago I was there and saw a semi-crashed up Lear 60 being taken away on a flatbed trailer. I heard from the line crew that they executed a go-around, and then made a tight left hand pattern to come around for another attempt at landing. Then they turned base to final over the numbers, landed cockeyed, bounced it, collapsed the landing gear, and slid off the runway.

Is that the same story you're talking about? Just wondering.

Tell the pax you'll get into ASE at any cost. They go sit back down and continue drinking champagne. Divert and land at Rifle instead, without telling the pax you're diverting. Problem solved.

That's all good until you get a Pax with a SE Private that thinks he is Chuck Yeager, and won't leave the cockpit cause he is backseat flyin'. Part 91 flying at its finest....

"Sir, this is my last warning. Go back to your seat and remain there for the rest of the flight, or I'll have the authorities meet us upon landing and you will be arrested on federal charges of interfering with a crew member. Is that clear?"

.....It is inappropriate to have passengers in the cockpit trying to dictate flight ops......
Fixed it to align with my personal experience!

Oh, BTW, anyone remember the Aaliyah crash? Yet another case of passenger dictating a flight and pressuring a pilot into making a very bad decision..

That crash looks terrible, I'm surprised there were survivors looking at the pics. RIP to the victim.

I've never been into ASE, but I was on Skywest's inaugural SFO-MMH-SFO as a pax. We arrived at sunset, but the takeoff was in the dark of the night and...interesting. The flight canceled the next 9 days in a row.
