Canadair Crash at ASE / Aspen Eagle, Colorado

Doubt it's much more than 10.

I've heard, though never experienced it personally, that ASE tower can get "creative" with wind reports to help guys out.
N115WF was informed by tower that the Falcon in front of it reported a 20 knot gain and to use caution for low level wind-shear as a result.

N303GA crashed attempting to get into ASE in 2001 right before the airport closed for the night, and after previous aircraft missed their approaches and diverted. Killed 3 crew + 15 pax. The charter client is blamed because he entered the cockpit and "encouraged" the crew to land - he was hosting a dinner party that evening, and would have been late if they diverted and were forced to drive.

I'm just a dumb regional turboprop pilot, but I can't imagine trying it again barring exigent circumstances, unless I have all the fuel in the world, etc.

Well, their Flightaware tracks shows they held for awhile before trying. Or I guess trying again, as the case may be.

Just throwing this out there... ASE tower/approach can get a bit creative with the winds at times. I can't imagine they would with a gusting to 30kt TW, but I don't know.

That's not any good.

Liveatc.net recording doesn't sound like they were getting the least bit creative.

Yeah, these guys lined up on the highway rather than the runway. A portion of the highway runs parallell to the runway. Descended below mins and punked into the terrain that cuts through the final line of the runway. Too low and off course........and client yelling at them; bad combination.

This is a bad deal, prayers to family and friends and hope for speedy recovery.
Makes me wonder if this crash didn't prevent an even bigger accident involving 528AP......just sayin'

Unfortunately, that would only be a tertiary finding, that kind of pressure to perform. Even though it's real.

115WF went missed on the first approach. The two a/c in front of them reported between 15-20 kts increase and low level windshear. Then 5WF made the attempt and went missed.

This thread makes me sad. You know those guys or their passengers never expected that outcome.

I've, uh, heard, yeah, heard, about a Lear 60 doing a circling approach into there after the captain (and owner of the charter company) botched up the approach and landing so badly there really weren't any other options.

Well, our Balked procedure basically is a circle. But it's a circle to get the heck out of there.

How far away is a suitable airport for the avg biz-jet if the wx is that bad.

With ASE being a one-way airport hemmed in by granite at the south end, I suppose a missed approach at minimums to RWY 15 is one heck of a b****-to-the-wall affair.
