C-17 down at Elmendorf!

C-17 down in Alaska?

I've heard chatter of a C-17 demo team crashing near Elmendorf. Fate of the crew unknown.

Anyone have info on this?

I'm one of those people that usually shrugs off those "it's been a bad week for aviation" comments...but damn, it's been a bad week. I've read everything from airliners, banner tows, military, gen av, medevac and airshow crashes now in the past few days.

Hoping for good news, everyone gets to go back to their friends and families tonight.

First comment:

"Training Mission....it was a national guard c-17... I saw it 30 mins before it crashed and took a few pictures... when it hit the ground i heard it and felt the ground rumble and shake... search and rescue helicopter was on scene at 6:48 exactly... I know cause i have a pictures of it as it got there... 4 on board.... my thoughts are no survivors as the helicopter left shortly after arriving"

Active duty at EDF is 3rd wing, Guard is 176th wing.

I was in Anchorage when the E-3 went down after ingesting geese. Hope this isnt a bird issue as well.

Crap, that sucks.

They usually don't release the names for 24-48 hours, because they have to notify next of kin and then the next of kin spends some time notifying other family, making travel arrangements and that kind of thing. The AF doesn't want family members to find out their loved ones died on CNN before they hear about it in person. That always made sense to me.

Still, I'll be waiting to read the names tomorrow or the next day. I know I sent several students to that unit, and I know a handful of folks in the C-17 community. I don't know if this is selfish, or what, but I hope it wasn't any one of the guys I know.

One of the guys I went to UPT with is in that unit. You may know him too since he was an Aero guy but a 99er, D.D. I really really hope he wasn't on that plane.
