Bush Flying

I'll be around then. I would also add that I kinda like Bethel. Not saying I want to build a summer home there or anything, but there are worse places.

Ok, How about we do a Alaska pilots (or soon to be) JC meet up either the 9th or 10th at a bar/restaurant down near Ted Stevens?

Suggestions on where appreciated.

Pipers is at the Coast hotel right there by the airport. If I have the day off and can go I would be happy to give you a lift if you want to go further than the airport.

I'd take everyone out for the "crawl-for-it-all" if I was up there, but y'all'll have to wait until I come home one of these days.

All confirmed! I'll be in ANC for a short layover at 3P on Jan 28th, then heading to Bethel on Corvus for ground school with Yute Air starting the 31st. Here I come Alaska! :D

I'd like to thank you all for the advice you've given over the past years. We'll have to meet up once I get some free time.

Congrats! Its my day off, otherwise I would walk over and say hi.

Getting closer. Pipers for the 9th and Glacier's for the 10th?

On a related note, what should I wear to make the rounds at the 135 ops? I am guessing this isn't a suit and tie sort of thing. Not with the long term forecast expecting snow and 15 as the high the day I arrive.

Sure. Looks like I'll be around.
For clothing may I suggest oily jeans and a tattered hoodie?

I wore a button up shirt, clean pants (not jeans) and a clean soft shell jacket. But I'm still waiting to hear about a job so maybe the oily hoddy would be better .

Wow, it's been a while, but my heart is still set on living and flying the bush somewhere beautiful, especially on floats. I've made some changes in my life and some progress toward that goal, but it's coming along slower than I would like.
I left my old non-aviation job and started a new aviation-related job a couple of years ago as an airframe mechanic. I saved money from every paycheck last year for CFI training this year, and now I'm about a third of the way through my CFI training. The knowledge tests are done, I just have to get ready for the oral and flight test now. If I can maintain the training pace I am on, I should have my CFI by the end of this summer (2016), and CFII by New Years. Then I'm hoping to get MEI, tailwheel, and SES done in 2017 if I don't run out of money first.
Dreaming/looking ahead...how does one go about getting a job in a DHC-2, -3, and/or -6? From the job openings I have found in those airframes, they usually require around 1000 hrs TT on floats/500 PIC floats. How do I get that kind of time in an airplane that I can't rent? Do I need to buy or build a floatplane to build time in? How realistic is it to get hired as a ASES CFI with no float experience except the rating itself? My eventual goal is to fly Beavers, Otters, and/or Twin Otters on floats, I just don't know how to get there.
Sure, I'm probably talking years from now, but I'd really like to live this dream eventually.

You start by flying smaller airplanes on floats. Like a PA18/180/185/206. For the twin otter on floats get yourself an ATP MES and call up Seaborne.

There are 135 operators in FL/NY with Caravans that hire wet SES pilots as FO's. Then slide them to the other seat.

Right, but how do you get into them if nobody rents floatplanes or hires wet ASES CFIs? It's a catch-22.
I started looking at F-19 Taylorcrafts and 85-90 hp Champs on floats today. They aren't priced too bad, but I haven't checked on insurance yet.
Seaborne might be a possibility depending on how much ME and/or AMES time they require for FOs. With the new asinine ATP rules, I don't think I can afford to get the ATP without employer assistance.

That's good to know. I'm not too thrilled about living in or near densely populated areas, but maybe I can suck it up for a year or two if I have to. I'll have to do some digging on Google. Thanks.

There's operators that hire wet CSES. Usually with some time flying on wheels already. Not Wet CSEL and SES.
Seaborne requires just an ATP MES, nothing more from what I understand. You'd be right seat in the dhc-6 as it's 121 flying.
