I'm here at BUR with about an hour and a half to kill with my scanner before I pick up a friend and was wondering if anyone knew of any good places to hang out and watch the jets come in? That are free?

I didn't know this was airliners.net. ;)

Hardy har har, I just would like to watch the traffic while I wait. I figured the term plane spotting would get my point across.

There are places that charge for such things?

I think he means something other than say a terminal parking garage or similar, where you can go to the top and take pics; but have to pay the garage ticket on the way out.

Can somebody explain this whole 'plane spotting' thing? I ran into this Scottish guy with binos in the parking lot of my office and he was copying down all the N numbers of the planes on the ramp. He was with a group of other guys and they were working as a team. I've seen them before and they travel to the US just to do this.

What is the point?

I don't get it either... I was just using the term to explain that I wanted to watch the activity around the airport since I had time to kill.

I guess it depends who you talk to.

To some, plane spotting is just watching planes at an airport, killing time etc, just like you were doing.

However there seems to be a ...I guess hobby.....of formal plane-spotting thats more like plane tracking. There are people who love to track the movements of particular registration numbers all over the world and get pics of them in different places. These are the hardcore a.net type people generally.

To actually attempt to answer your question, although it's a little late now I suppose... There used to be a field off the end of one of the runways that had a set of bleachers in it... I don't know if it's still there or not though. My Dad used to take me there when I was little once in a while.

I'm not really into the whole plane spotting thing, but if can cruise down to LAX. There's a small field on the north side of the airport that is directly under the approach path of 24R. And, it's right next to an In N' Out. Double victory! :)

My dad has been working with Northrup or Vought (I forgot which) down in LGB. He gives me a call every other week when they send him down from this In 'n Out.

There are those who have a sincere appreciation of aviation and for whatever reason this is how they pursue it. Not everyone can be a pilot. Everyone has a passion in life so no need to bash it. Although I have never taken a trip for the sole purpose of aviation photography I have requested rooms in hotels which face airports. I love all things aviation!

yeah, In-N-Out at LAX rawks... :rawk:

It's different things to different people.

There's a place near here called Coyote Point, it's a park that's under the approach to the 28's at SFO. I've gone there, with or without camera, quite a few times. Sometimes I've gone with friends and sometimes I go alone just to think.

I love aviation so it's relaxing and feels natural.
