personally i dont find either of those watches in the LEAST bit attractive, and a killer fishing expedition sounds way awesomer.
 
Breitling looks more professional to me. The whole Red/Blue bit on the Rolex looks pretty hokey.

What about a Tag-Heuer ? Always thought those looked a little more functional and less, "Hey, look what I'm wearing.":)
 
I wear a Timex Expedition which I bought at WallyWorld for $20.00 several years ago, and I can't see any difference in my basic airmanship as compared to the captains I fly with who wear $1000.00+ watches. Beware of watch envy.:laff:

i sometimes find it challenging to lift my arm, but it sure gets the ladies.

I too wear a Timex and can't for the life of me justify spending more than $50 for a watch. No bling for this captain...

I once bought a $10 Rolex in NYC just for kicks. I felt stupid wearing it believing that others would think I was trying to impress them. Had they looked closely though they would have seen that it didn't keep time and looked like something Liberace would of liked with all the gold and diamonds. Realizing how stupid it was wearing something like that, which is so not me, I gave it to my grandson to play with and haven't seen it since.
 
I have a Casio Wave Ceptor. I got it as a gift but can't imagine it cost more then $50. It syncs with the atomic clock everynight. Awesome watch. No dials on the side to get caught on boxes.
 
i have both and i wear the rolex more. i like it more. it is nice to have the gmt hand when writing out all these flight plans!
 
Breitling!

The GF already told me if I follow through on this whole career change, once I get my first jet gig (be it charter, 135 or 121) she would get me the Breitling of my choice.:rawk:

I looked at a lot of watches and for the amount of money that the higher end ones bring, I think Breitling has them all beat.
 
If I ever spend that much on a watch, somebody shoot me. :D

That said.......IF I were going to buy a watch in that range, I'd go with the Breitling.
 
After reading some of these posts a second time, a question was raised.

If you current career pilots saw a fellow crew member with a Breitling, would you be at all offended or would you consider them overzelous (knowing roughly how much they would be making)?

Would this give you a bad impression of such person before ever really knowing them?
 
I've got a $100 Fossil Titanium watch with a blue face. I got it 5 years ago, and the thing is lightweight and bulletproof. I'm willing to bet I'll keep the thing for 15-20 years without replacing anything but the crystal in it (which has pretty much been destroyed) and the battery.

Why waste more money than you need to? I'd take the $900 you could save yourself and put it in the bank, it'd come in handy when you need to eat and you're poor.

Not once have I checked out the timepiece on a fellow crewmember. If I ever did see that they had an expensive watch, I would just think they spent way too much. Other than that I could care less about it.

I have a Fossil my wife gave me for Christmas 5 years ago. The battery died last fall so I took it to the outlet mall and they installed a new one and cleaned/polished the watch for 5 bucks.

The GPS clock in my airplane has GMT, I use my watch for time and date only. No fancy pilot's watch needed here.
 
I don't see anything wrong with treating yourself to something nice every now then once you're settled in and all the bills are paid. Your priority would be misdirected if you buy an expensive watch while still on the right seat of a regional working to pay off your loans. I bought my 1st Rolex (stainless steel submariner) at 31 years old. I had $0 loans and had just pocketed over 300k from the sale of my ist home, so it was a treat for me. I spent $3,000 for it and I wore it for 5 years before I got transferred to an office job and felt that I needed something less casual. I sold my watch for $3,300- can't believe I got more than what I paid for it- and bought a Datejust for $3,800. As a treat and incentive, I plan on getting either the Rolex GMT or Breitling once I get my 1. commercial/cfi ticket 2. retire from my current job (less than 4 years away) and 3. sell my investment real estate.
 
Naw franknyc...don't get me wrong. My comment wasn't meant to say that I thought it would be a bad thing if you purchased an expensive watch. Go for it.

I merely meant that such a purchase isn't something I would do.

If it's something you want - do it. Rolex and Breitling make beautiful watches. If you're able, get one and enjoy! :D
